Why you should not use fibreglass wicks to rebuild your atty

Finally after many weeks, I've made a video showing fibreglass wicks actually melts under high temperature.



Though silica and fibreglass is basically the same thing the main difference is how they are constructed.

So what? Every material melts or vaporizes if temperature is high enough. Definitely your butan lighter produces temperature high enough to melt silica wick. The question is what temperature your lighter produces and what temperature atomizer's coil produces? I guess the later is much lower.

Yup you're right. Fibreglass softens at around 1700degF and butane lighters generally produces heat around 2000degF.

The reason I don't recommend them is because it is dependant on the gauge of the nichrome used are different across the manufacturers. The gauge of the nichrome affects the current going through it and most importantly affects the heat it produces. The commonly available nichrome has the potential to hit 2000degF

Unless u're dead sure about those data, fibreglass is a no no.

actually I'm more worried about the fine fragments of fibre glass that may get inhaled. so I fire the wick to melt them a bit before I install it. glass not biodegradeable, can you imagine what will happen if they get lodged in your lungs, almost like abestos.

But if you melt it how will it wick optimally ?

I think that the best wick should not be deformed or melted by the coil.

That's why the Genesis atty was invented,ss mesh wick and no solder.Not to mention each wrap costs about a nickel.

filters on those nasty stinky anlogs are fiberglass also..posting this kind of stuff has the potential to give FDA more firepower

because of the fact that the silica rope seem to handle a higher temp then the fiberglass, I think I'll stick with the silica! just my choice...
