I use an 8% Double RY4 for my daily vape. Over the course of about 3-4 weeks, my wicks become midely clogged, and I soak them in warm water over night and dry them for reuse.

I thought I read where I could just use PG, VG or a combination, without any additives or flavors, to vape through the atomizer and it would do basically all the cleaning I needed. Any opinions or recommendations on this method?

I'm also using 8% Double RY4, mixed 50/50! I found straight PG will help buy some time, but won't break down the gunk too much. A thorough cleaning for me involves a vodka soak for 15min, empty, refill and shake, followed by a couple very hot tap water fill and shakes. The vodka, or clear high proof alcohol of your choice, breaks down the residue much more than hot water can. I shake out the water like a thermometer, run the coil in 5 second increments a half dozen times and refill. I do this about once a week, or about 30ml vaped. If you keep the residue levels down there's less buildup on the coil and it lasts longer.

I also do Double RY4 at 6%. You didn't say what kind of wick so I'm assuming silica or cotton. I prefer bottom coils if I'm using a clearo and they are easy to clean or replace. Drippers on the other hand are tough to clean. The maker of Cisco Spec atty's like the SR & LR510's and HH357 instruct owners not to dry burn. Not being able to see the coil, this is good advice. I soak in alcohol for 15 minutes, blow it out, let it dry, then repeat with hot distilled water a couple of times.

However, cleaning for hardware used for ADV's can be tricky. I guess a tank with a carto would be a way to go as there's really no cleaning of the coil. Just use for awhile and replace.

RBA's with SS coils can be dry burned. I have a dripper that uses a silica wick. When it gunks up I just put in a new wick and coil.

That leaves the top coil, silica wick clearos. Most have pre-built coils and wick. I gave up on Vivi Novas and the like awhile ago. No more hangy wicks for me. Too much hassle to clean, what with soaking and dry burning. Meh.
