Hi All,
Just bought another REO for the wife and am looking for an alternative to cotton in the reomizer 2.0.She has been using mine and sometimes forgets to squonk and toasts the wick.I've been wading through the readyxwick threads and it seems like a huge hassle to get the build right.rayon,cellucotton.silica.It's all sort of confusing.Anyone out there have a simple foolproof solution.

Thanks and have learned a ton from everyone here!

My personal preference is 3mm RxW. Not the hassle some folks may make it out to be in form wrapped coils. Even works great with an ugly coil wrapped right on it with a support rod in the center of the RxW while wrapping. You can't burn it, can easily restore it by dry burning or torching, the coil and wick lasts for a very long time.

I also still use KGD. Mine is stored in a tin with some pads pre split, lengths pre cut in various widths for various coil sizes and scissors to trim after installed. Only takes a minute to rewick duals with it if needed, a kid could do it. KGD replaced the organic cotton balls that were fine for the time.

Taste is subjective, but I never felt the need to boil cotton wicking materials (Hydrogen peroxide has been a remedy for many things, including oral for as far back as I can remember).

All my Reos have 2mm/3mm RxW or KGD wicks.

Back in the days I liked the fastest wicking of all from CelluCotton (Rayon) . But my LDLH's can burn it in half in short order, including in a Reo atty if I don't squonk every couple of hits (depending on build).

The mess days were fine for the time but are not missed (nor is that gear). Never really liked silica or SnC/CnC.

YMMV

2mm Readyxwick was never large enough for my mtl hits. I wouldn't mind trying 3mm or larger.

2mm RxW is what HRH runs in her Atomics - and it's just about ok for mtl.

I've always run 3mm in 7/64" id coils of 26g for my stuff, but i am a cloud chaser. You'd find it ticks all the boxes.
..........

If the wife burns wicks, then at least get onto silica wicks. 2mm silica doubled over is easy enough to wrap on and it's a fast way to make wicks and coils for testing.
RxW is expensive - so i suggest using that when you have builds that are in daily use, e.g. i use 3mm dual coils at 0.3Ω - i've used them for ages, can build them in little time and blowtorch them clean.

The RxW is hard to beat in an REO or any other bottom feeder, you can't burn it and it doesn't taste absolutely terrible when you get that dry hit. I splurged on my Turbo Coiler build and spent $25 or so, knocks out perfectly tight 3/32nd coils almost every time and the 3mm RxW slides through them as quick as anything I've tried.

The first bottle is a little flat, just gets better after that. I wicked a OCC coil for my Subtank with the RxW and did the same thing. By the 2nd day I would say it was better than the cotton and stayed that way until the taste started going away on day 5. I got my REO's running by the end of the full week with that coil and that was the end of the test. I never cleaned it and continued on, but I have had no issues dry burning and rinsing the RxW in my REOs

I can certainly see wher the people who were the first to use it could have run into problems, it doesn't behave like other wicks. There's so many things that others have figured out that it's pretty much plg and play now.

The Juice you use will dramatically have an impact on the times you change the coil and wicking material. I use NET (Naturally Extracted Tobacco) Juices, and after about 15ml, I like to change the coil and wick to keep things fresh tasting. Kanthal is very inexpensive, and so is a box of CelluCotton. I keep pre-made coils put up. Only takes 1 min to change the coil, and add a fresh wick.

I suggest talking to the wife about squonking. She has to keep the coil saturated with fresh juice every 2-3 puffs.

Are you sure that 3mm READYxWICK slides right into a 3/32" coil?
3/32" = 2.38125mm
3mm READYxWICK = 2.7mm

RBA Suppies recommends 7/64"(2.78mm)snug to 1/8"(3.17mm)loose for 3mm READYxWICK

I can confirm that 3/32 works great with 3mm RxW. I usually finesse it a little (roll it with my fingers, pull on it, etc) to straighten it out. After that, it usually goes on through. I discontinued using RxW because of the NET jucies I use. I'd rather just change the coil and replace the wick....than use a pen torch all the time.

3/32" seems to be the best diameter mandrel for use w/ the 3mm RxW that I have found and I've been using it exclusively for well over a year now. The trick to RxW, IMO, is it is nothing like traditional wicking. If it just slides into the coil, it doesn't work properly. It needs to be threaded into the coil. I find it best to moisten the tip, (cut at 45deg), and pinch and roll with your fingers to make a point. Then insert the point into the coil and screw it in the same direction as your coil is wound. You will find that after it is in the coil it will move easily, but still make full contact with the coil. My wicking has lasted me minimum of 3 months from original setup and a couple are nearing the 5 month range. It doesn't get much more simple than this IMO....
