I started doing them like Scott does on his Ody video. Kinda tedious because my nails are too short to grip and twist. I was looking at fly-tying vise when I came across this little jewel:

Non Skid HACKLE PLIERS Fly Tying Tools | eBay

Instead of twisting the small parts I grab them with this and twist the long ends, I can easily get them tight and perfect. I then trim them short and wrap with the NR wire. My connections are much smaller, tighter and more uniform than doing it like the video. I bought them at local Gander Mountain for less than $5.

nice...I use hemostats (spelling?)myself..start my twists then hold long wires with hemo twist shorts then snip. small and perfect.

Hemostats are dirt cheap on amazon and are super handy. Since silver NR wire is so soft, you have to be super careful. Note that Nat starts first, then uses the Hemostats. This is a good way to avoid the pitfalls of twisting off the soft metal wires prematurely.

But grab a pair of resistance wires on some Hemostats, grab the other end with another pair, and twist them in opposite directions 30 or 40 times , and use 5.5 cm instead of a shorter resistance segment, and you will find about 7 coils instead of 4 will be quite vaporous. Another reason to grab a couple pair on amazon.

...I think i need to go down in gauge,I currently get two coils (kanthal 32)as i like 1.1+ ohm coils and I think i miss out on some vapor. If I went with like a 30 instead of 32 I might get one or even two more wraps with same resistance?.

I haven't tried 30 yet but I've thought about it. It would be pretty thick based on the 30GA NR silver wire I have. I'm pretty sure it would need to at least be heated first in order to get good coils. Would be nice to try a few more coils with multiple wicks.

Looking at 30 it's only 8.6 ohms per 12 inches of resistance versus 14ohms per 12 inches for 32.
