here, there and everywhere
I am finally taking the time to mess around with my supplies I bought. First of all, I cut the wire rope, torched it GOOD, put it in water, torched and dipped one more time then rinsed it off good a couple days ago. Tonight I put one thin wrap of mesh around it and wrapped a coil. Good so far........I get 1.6 ohms, great, lets fire this thing. The only coil I can get to fire is the top and bottom. This now gets HOT and I do mean HOT. Don't touch it or you get burnt! lol Anyway, should I take the mesh off? Are you guys just using the wire rope as the wick OR should I put it in a ceramic sleeve? I have 1/16 which is too small for the rope. 1/8 seems HUGE and not sure how I would use it. I am open for suggestions. Thanks!!

Update: After playing around a few times, re-wrapping my coil. It is now working beautifully!! I may have just wrapped it too tight getting used to this. WOW, I am THRILLED that I won't have to buy another mesh wick or try to make them. This is awesome!!!!

I too am interested in the replies to this as I have had almost the exact same experience.

Used 1/8 SS rope in a Smoktek RSST RBA. Manually took the nylon thread out then torched it twice till good and red hot, did not quench at all. Did the same to a small piece of mesh. Wrapped the mesh around the rope in a single layer, cutting off the excess to the point of barely overlapping the mesh around the wick (slight fold on the outer edge of mesh to minimize scratchy wire edge). Wound some 33g kanthal around it, wound up with a 2.5 ohm coil. Fired it off dry and the bottom and top legs were hot spots. Did the great magical prod for about 10 minutes with an occasional drop of fluid until I built up a little oxidation and got the hot spots gone.

I am vaping this thing at 10w on an eVic. barely getting any vapor, flavor, or TH. The top deck of the RBA is getting quite hot after a while, but no hotspots detected. It appears to be wicking just fine as I see a small pool of fluid collect where the rope comes out of the top deck. Doing the Ginny tilt seems to lessen rather than strengthen the vape (am I flooding it?).

This is a brand new RBA, never used it before, so I am unsure if it is a problem with the RBA or with the wick or with the coil???????

how high can you up your watts on your mod? If i was at ten watts i dont think it would work all that great. I find that this set imo works best at high watts. I run at 14-15 myself and could not be more happy. As far as the hot spots go i have to work mine out the same way too. I am using rsst also.

Hey Mike,

I doubt that It is the RSST, one of the problems with using wire rope is the fact it is a really good heatsink. You are proably getting the wick too wet as well. The key is finding that perfect ballance between too much wicking and not enough. I would recommend for someone new to genisis attys the Peter K method. Although I have heard that you might have problems using an eVic with SS because of the low pulse width of the eVic. Mechanical mods work best.

I would just drop a wrap.... doesnt really matter the watts and ohms, just make sure its a good vape. Use one less wrap and go from there.

@Boden

Wow, thanks a bunch!!!! The eVic maxs out at 11w, so I put it on a Vamo and cranked it up to 14w and now I am getting good vape!!!

That was the ticket, the RSST and the wick/coil were just fine. I was just used to the AGA T2 as I get good results on it down around 8-9w with a mesh wick, so it didnt occur to me that wattage was my issue. Thanks a bunch, I see light at the end of the tunnel.....

@arh32, does your RSST get hot after chain vaping a little while?

It's the thin top cap that lets it get so hot, although it's not bad with silica.

Thanx arh, but all I really did was follow Scuba Dan's stuff...He's the genius...

The RSST AC9 clones can be drilled out to 3/16". The (Top Fin) ceramic does a OK job IMO, but I want to try the Bonded Glass, in that diameter. It is more fragile than the traditional ceramic that were cutting up, but the AC9, may breath life back into that idea.

However, this SS rope needs investigating without a doubt. I was thinking how cool it would be with Ribbon Kanthal.

Ribbon Kanthal, spreads the heat more evenly than traditional round Kanthal, and is less prone to hot spots. I want it (SS rope) to work without the need for wire mesh......

Waiting on my order of this, just a question. What are you guys using to cut the ss rope? Should I go buy a cheapo dremel for this?

SS cable, is always best cut using the before mentioned cutoff wheel..ALWAYS
I use SS cable allot in the course of my job...

Sure, you can cut it with heavy enough cutters, but the wheel makes it a breeze...

I have a dremel but didn't need it to cut the wire. I bought a simple wire cutter at Walmart and cut mine. Just make sure the blades meet evenly to cut and that it doesn't cut like scissors. I am a female and was able to cut the wire fairly easily. I am sure you men will have no trouble with it :p lol
