And this is the finished wick, with cotton wrapped around the .32" center core. The cotton is from a towel i found at walmart
100% Cotton flour sack cloth. I just cut a small strip, and wrapped it like you would a SS mesh.

this would probably work with ekowool or xc-116 perfectly.

Still no work for me.
I did what you did, but I used cotton ball instead. It burned quick after a long vape. I have been using cotton ball on my MT3 clearomizer all the time. To the point, that I think I am can be a pro of cotton ball wick :D
I then went back to the original method, which is ss mesh diaper on the whole ss cable, wicks great now. But there are 3 problems.

1- It's funny that the problem is that it's wicking too well. Meaning it wick too much. I can vape vertical 100% of the time. Never tilt. But the problem is that when I suck on the tip, I also suck the juice up. After several long sucks, I got juice flooded the coil chamber and come out of the vent hole. I got 2 shirts dark e-juice drips on the chest like a little kid

2- It is so hard to get rid of hot spot (red/orange coil). Now I can get it to the point that it hardly get red, but still get it sometimes. Remember, I used to complain that I get nasty taste/smell and thought it was the ss cable gave me that. Actually, it is the hot spot gave me the bad taste/smell, and hot burn in my mouth too.

3- How do you guy avoid/prevent short? My wick is short to the metal plate very often. All I know is to giggle it. Sometimes I get lucky, but most of the times, I do not.

not sure about vertical vaping, i just hold mine at a natural angle . I have noticed that in morning after it has been sitting vertical all nite, the cotton tip is still totally saturated, and when i did my testing, i basically made a jig to hold a wick vertical in a small resevoir of juice, with a completely dry wick it only took about 10-15 min to totally saturate the cotton tip.

I have my 2mm cable with a 1x1cm wrap of oxidized 500 count mesh. I will absolutely over wick if tilted too much. My method of fixing that was to vape the opposite to normal. I vape with the wick up. I also leave all the fill screws in. As far as eliminating hot spots I wrap my coil on lightly oxidized mesh.....typically before I pop my cable in the device. Then I load it into the atty and secure the negative and positive legs. To get the nice even glow I tinker with the coil below the red one.....and o go down each wrap like that. In just a minute you have a purty glowing coil. Then vape away-

I got over wick vertical 100% of the time. It flooded when I suck on it.

Wen you say "In just a minute you have a purty glowing coil". Do we want red coil, or we don't want red coil? I thought we don't want coils to turn red at all?

When the wick and tank is DRY, we want an even red glow on all coils.

When there is juice in the tank and the wick is WET, we don't want any glowing coils.

Sent from my phone, ecxuse teh speling mitsaeks.

Ok, I'm confused. I just got my XC-116 from Omega, but when I cut it, it frayed and unwinds. I've tried torching it with a map gas torch for 10 minutes. Just long enough for it to stop smoking, then when I touched it, it went to dust. Did I torch it to long? How do I cut it so it doesn't fray?

Thanks in advance for the help.

did some more playing around tonight after work. my goal was to be able to replace the cotton without having to re-coil, why waste a perfectly good working coil because the cotton, mesh, whatever is gunked up ?

so i went to hobby lobby and bought a bag of misc. sized tubes and metal shapes, it was like $17. my idea was to make a coil form, wick insertion tool. well as it turns out, all of the tubing in the back had too thick of a wall thickness. oh well, since i tinker alot i am sure i will find a use for this stuff eventually.
so while i am sitting there frustrated at this and contemplating my original plan of buying some thin walled 1/8" needle tubing from mcmaster,
i just happened to have the drawer open on my desk and looked over and saw my AMP pin extraction tool sitting there, thin walled stainless tube with plunger and just a little over 1/8" (.128).

SCORE !!!!!

so what i did is wrap the qtip as described earlier, then stuff the wick, qtip end first into the extraction tool. then wrap a coil around the outside of the tool.

insert protruding wick end into the aga wick hole, connect coil, then slowly push wick the rest of the way into the hole and when it bottoms out, while pushing on the plunger, withdraw the tool from the coil.

next time, i should be able to insert the tool, with a wick loaded into it, into the coil without messing it up.

if anybody is interested in this method, the amp part # is: 305183
several places have them online, i saw it at mouser for around $12

I haven't seen this set-up before but seems to work great. Its 1/32 XC-116 Ceramic Wick Kiln Treated over 3/32" Diameter 316 Stainless Steel Wire Rope 7 X 7 Strand Core, . Kind of tricky 2 get the xc-116 over the SS cable but not that hard. Came up with this Idea a while back and think its pretty good for my 2nd RBA. Give it a try. 20130604_013330.jpg20130604_014620.jpg20130604_014722.jpg

The xc-116 covers the full wick and works great.

Is the XC-116 on the wire rope the only way to go? When I wrap my 3/32 7x7 with mesh and build a coil on it for the RSST, I notice that the top deck and cap get very hot after moderate usage of a few minutes. Does the sleeve prevent the heat transfer to the deck? Also if the wire rope gets so hot, will it not adversely affect the bottom where it's touching the inside of the tank?

Should I just stick with mesh wicks?

I use the exact same setup as you and although my atomizer gets a little hot at times I've noticed no ill effects. The wire rope is really nice and wicks much better than mesh. I still notice however, that once my tank is halfway empty I still need to tilt it a bit. Overall, sub ohm coils on the wire rope are nice :)

How much higher than the centre post in your wire rope? Mine was around 1/4 - 1/2 cm taller. I'm wondering if it was a little close or perhaps even touching the top cap and transferring heat that way. My mesh wick is cut exactly to the same length as the centre post.

My rope was even or just a hair shorter than the center post. My first build the rope was a tad longer than I hope and it may have touched the cap but I don't believe so. Subsequent builds I keep it even or just a tad shorter, depends on my cutting skills lol.

Once I tried xc-116 by itself I knew immediately THAT is the only way to go, for me, in a genny.

I love the look and wicking performance of ss rope but considering the heat retention and how incredible the xc performs by itself I don't see a need to mess with the ss rope anymore.

Dang.. Ppl are really interested in this..getting lots of Pms

I know I just sent you one. I orderd from Bosun Supplies and they are taking forever to ship my ss rope. Does anyone have any feedback on them as far as shipping speed goes? I placed my order on the 1st of the month and all it shows on the site is "queued".
