AB, it was shiny, not grey not and dull, so it should be the good stuff. :) But it wouldn't hurt to test it. I would, but I don't have any draino & the store is too far away for a quick purchase.

The galvanized stuff at home depot is VERY shiny.. please dont let this be the indicator you use to decide if your rope is okay.

I stand corrected, but how do they get the galvanized so shiny?
Ours was regular shiny, not super bright fake shiny, so I'm sure it's still okay. Wouldn't hurt to test it, of course, but I'm sure it's fine.

Galvanized stuff IS shiny. What you see every day is oxidized by the weather giving it that dull appearance.

I did some more experimenting last night and came up with something that works really good.

i am using the 7x7 wrap 316 stainless rope, but i cut the wick when inserted in my aga t2, the top of the wick is flush with the wick hole. i then pulled the center strand out of the wire, but only till it was at the center post height. i then wrapped this smaller wire with cotton to fill my coil diameter.
wicking is still very good, but now i don't have hardly any of the heatsinking effect i was getting with the full rope, heat up time is almost instant. and the best part is, now i don't have to re coil everytime i want/need to change the cotton out, just pull the cotton tip out of the coil, pull the wick up, re-wrap with cotton ,and stick back in the tank through the coil.

superdave, sounds like a good design, but I can't picture the detail. Can you be able to post some pictures of what/how you did?
Thanks.

yes, but i am work now, i'll get some pics tonight when i get home, i want to re-do my coil as it got a little tight at the bottom and the cotton is just barely in the coil there.

Don't think it could get hot enough Uma, but another way is to scrape with a sharp knife, galvanized will get very shiny and leave small particles on finger clean stainless will not change.
Another thing comes to mind here, if one accidentally did vape galv and it got hot enough to burn the zinc one would find a sweetness in back of throat, any welders out there will know what I mean. Please don't think I am suggesting that its ok to use galvanized by that comment.
Rut Roh. When I cut it to fit, before boiling and torching, I noticed little shivers decorating the black cloth underneath.
While shaving some off with a steak knife just now, a few shivers came off. (either from the knife or the cable).
So....
Am I going to turn into ZincWoman with magic powers? I've only vaped one tank so far, because it was a desert (chocolate mint), thank goodness.

:::Off to PM AB the theory, who alerted me in the first place but I totally humbugged it like the idiot I are::::

If you have been vaping galvanised for a tank I really wouldn`t worry about it unduly Uma :( the amount of zinc plating on a short section of rope that will burn off and be inhaled is negligable for the time you`ve been doing it :) (but not a good thing to be doing long term!
I`ve breathed in the fumes from welding galvanised on lots of occasions and have yet to turn into "Zinc Woman" it`s just not advisable and it is avoidable.
Grab yourself some caustic soda crystals or "drano?" ( not heard of that here in the UK but I assume its a caustic drain cleaner) and drop a short section of the rope in it. It will fizz and bubble within a minute or less and you will clearly see a reaction.

316 is magnetic by the way, not the same as mild steel as there is less attraction and the magnet can be pulled off reletively easily compared.

I`v got both my RBA`s ( AGA-T2 and RSST) up and running now :) and for the present I`m using the 2mm SS rope (sort of halfway between 1/16th and 3/32nd) with a diaper of Ekowool around the top.
Both with 4 wraps of 30g Kanthal giving me 1.5ohm which is perfect for the Vamo.
A good flavour from the start! No hint of metallic taste and a nice even sizzle with no pops, the vapour is good but not blinding however I`m running 70pg/30vg as I`m more into the taste and TH rather than plumes :)
It`s much better results (and easier) than the SS mesh I was using (although being bloody minded I`ll still try to perfect that method as well). I`ve got different flavours in both RBA`s but the same pg/vg ratio and it`s a world of difference from the Evods I use with these flavours...... having said that....
I`ve just rebuilt one of them using 30g and 6 wraps around a toothpick ( 1.6ohm ) and pulled through some 1.5mm Ekowool doubled over, used a single piece of 1.5mm as a flavour wick and turned the cup upside down..... bloody nice!:D Less vapour than the RBA`s but a cooler vape and on par with the flavour!
The best set-up I`ve got so far with the Evods :) and I`m running it on a Std eGo battery at 3.3v. Hmmmm think I`ll stick it on the Vamo and push it a bit ;)

question on hot spot.
I have heard this term many times and I guess it is when the coil turn red/orange, but I never know for sure if that's what it refers to. Question is how to avoid hot spot?

First time I did coils/wick on my genesis types, they don't get hot spots at all, no matter how long I kept the button depress. For testing reason, I redo it. After that, I never can get rid of it. No matter what I do, I keep getting the hot spot after the button is depressed a little long.

Another question I have is getting short on the aga T2. The metal wick (no matter if it is cable or mesh), is touching the base by the side of the hole. How can we expect for it not to get short?

okay here are some pics of what i described earlier
CutWick.jpg
This is the wick cut, it it the height of the wick hole in the aga

Wick_Disassembled.jpg
This is it disassembled to remove the string (mcmaster carr stuff has a string in the middle)

Wick_ReAssembled.jpg
this is wick, re-assembled, with the center core pulled out to one side aprox .32"

Wick_WithCottonTip.jpg

And this is the finished wick, with cotton wrapped around the .32" center core. The cotton is from a towel i found at walmart
100% Cotton flour sack cloth. I just cut a small strip, and wrapped it like you would a SS mesh.

superdave, thanks. I have tried cotton on top of the cable, but not pulling out the core like this. I am going to try this right now.
Question, do you have to tilt once in a while to wick, or you can just keep it straight up. I tried pulling the core completely out and vaped that way all day today on an RSST. It wicks good, vapes well, but I can't tilt it nor lay nor lay it down. If I do, juice will drip out.

not sure about vertical vaping, i just hold mine at a natural angle . I have noticed that in morning after it has been sitting vertical all nite, the cotton tip is still totally saturated, and when i did my testing, i basically made a jig to hold a wick vertical in a small resevoir of juice, with a completely dry wick it only took about 10-15 min to totally saturate the cotton tip.

Anybody doing this on a DID? I got one recently, short version. I've got the wick filling the hole and my coil wraps are very close to touching both posts. If I get rope big enough to fill the hole I'm not sure ill have room for sleeve and coil. I don't want a gap in the wick hole because I'm trying to go for leak proof setup.

Got any pics of them? What are you using for "diaper"? What size wire rope? Is it a tight or loose fit in the wick hole?

No pics but, 3/32 wire 7x7 wrapped with a 400 mesh diaper and 4/3 wrap of 32 gauge wire. Can't remember what ohms they are, but they are under 2 ohms
