Hey all I need opinions. Rob asked if I want a polyurethane finish on my 3rd run Jatoba Blood Wood Wooden Reo. I've only had natural finishes on my wooden mods and love the feel of them, but there have been times I envy the look of the fancy pants poly wooden mods. They look so nice and shiny for so long. No mater how much I wax and buff up my natural woodvils they never look as nice as the poly coated ones. But... the big but... :p.. I'm afraid that the poly coat will end up feeling like painted plastic. I've used poly coated wooden handles for different things before and if they get any kind of moisture on them it makes them feel plasticy and sticky until it's been cleaned off and dried out completely. Is it the same with poly coated Woodvils? If you get a little bit of juice on them does the whole thing feel sticky even after being wiped off until it dries out completely?

I like both. Love the feel of the natural finish and I don't have to have it all glossy shiny.

The poly that Robert does is really nice. I don't get that sticky till dry feel at all. Of course you can feel the sticky juice but once it is wiped off it is fine.

As far as I know the originals were all poly finished. So it might be a first to have one natural.

Robert did one for me, a refinish with poly. It is just the right amount, not too glossy but feels silky smooth. He just knows how to make them very special!

I really can't advise you to do one over the other. Both have their own merits.

Bahhh I know. That's my problem. There are positives and negatives to both..... I think I'll go natural just because I know what to expect and love the feel of wood. And (like you said) all the pictures I've ever seen of the originals they were poly coated so this will be a uniquely mine. (until someone else does it lol) Also I've seen people complain occasionally about poly coats, but never complain that they have a natural and wish it was polycoated. Though maybe I just haven't been reading the right threads. :p

I have 2 naturals and 1 poly. To tell you the truth, I really don't regard them as being that different - much less so than, say, my black wrinkle metal versus an anodized metal.

Rob's poly treatment is subtle, and maybe it's because of the woods involved (jatoba & bubinga naturals, lace wood poly), but it's not like one feels like plastic and two feel like wood. They sit side by side and just look like 3 wood mods. I don't think you'd be making a mistake by going poly (easier to maintain), and if worst came to worst, you could sand the poly off. :2c:

I wonder if that is also why it's held up so well. It really is in great shape for being used so much for so long.

Question: What kind of upkeep do you have to do with the poly coated ones? I'm "feed & Wax"ing my natural Woodvils every month or so. Do you have to do anything for the Polys?

All I have is the one lil mini it is poly coated. I have peanut butter cookie in it and that is a very sticky juice. I have over squonked and cleaning up the mod was much easier than when I did the same with a wrinkle.

I can still see and feel the grain indentations in the zebra and curly oak. Rob used a very light touch. It doesn't feel sticky or plastic like at all.

I like the feel of natural wood. I used Howards a few times on them and then I started using petroleum jelly....(I will pay for this I a sure) Just a little on your hands and rub it all over your wood. It will leave it silky smooth and well protected after a few applications.
I jellied my wood on Saturday [emoji12]

I have 3 naturals (curly oak, cocobolo and blood wood/maple) and 1 poly (spalted maple). My personal preference is the natural. With the Howard's wax on them there is something about the texture and look of a natural finish. The spalted is the most gorgeous wood but the texture of the poly finish, although it looks awesome and is very subtle in appearance diminishes the "wood feel". I have debated stripping it since I received it.
If you don't like the natural finish; it wouldn't take much to put a coat of satin poly on it.
Personally I think that Reo would look great natural!

The inside will need Howard's for sure. I also use it on the poly. It will clean and give a layer of protection. The orange oil in it won't soak through or in the poly but it will clean it. Then the wax protects.

All of mine, natural or poly get the wax.

Really nice looking Woodvil Ken, a classic that's for sure! If you're really unsure which way to go, I would think its easier to strip a poly finish, than to apply a poly finish like Rob does. But the Wood you have, looks like it would be great in natural. If the particular Wood type you have was released in the last run as a natural finish, I would think it would be safe to assume that it would be fine in a natural finish. Not all Woods suit a natural finish, now that's enough Woods and woulds for now I would think :)

Which he is not because I am Unsure (still never gets old) that said,I like poly on dyed stabilized wood because it makes the color pop imo and Tung oil or equivalent for natural wood REOs.
