I've used em on my BB with a 510>808 adapter and they worked pretty well for me... I had pretty decent luck with them overall. They produced decent vapor most of the time.. However, I did have instances that are just like what you describe- the harsh throat hit and very little vapor. I could usually correct for that by just continuing to hit it a few times in a row (puff, no inhale). That usually seemed to "clear up" the behavior. When I first got them I really really liked them, over time they became mediocre as I had a chance to compare their performance through aging and such. At first I thought I liked them better than my 510s, but that preferences changed back towards the 510s in time. I still have a handful of unused ones here that I will probably keep around for the sake of changing it up once and awhile. For now I'm trying 2.5Ohm XL CE2s. When the CE2 XLs are working correctly, they seem to produce the most good vapor and taste of any method I've tried to date. I would even have to say that it's a better quality hit than you can get off a freshly dripped-on atty, and as much or more vapor than I was getting off 510 LR cartos.
As far as the *way* I use traditional cartos.. I've always done initial filled using the condom method (see youtube, there are hundreds of examples of filling cartos this way). All subsequent filling was a constant sort of topping-up 3-7 drips at a time from the top. I pull the rubber grommet up top and leave it out, to be replaced by a drip tip. A drip tip is ideal because you can remove it quickly and easily to properly drip from the top (at about a 45 degree angle onto inside of the tube so that it runs down into the wadding). Re-insert the drip tip and start vaping again. In my experience, the hope and dreams of cartos being the solution to long intervals between filling was never realized with traditional cartos. When vaping heavily you have to keep the whole thing very saturated in order for the wicking process to keep up. Which means lots of dripping... Imagine direct-dripping an atty, 3 drips at a time, it's only slightly better because you'll go more like 5 drips at a time.
