Check out this exchange I just had in the comments of the recent Verge article... I actually got a researcher to admit he didn't even know that cig-a-likes were inferior to other higher-end eCigs... or what sort of bias a study on smoking cessation only featuring cig-a-likes would create

In the research I’m involved in almost all the participants that have tried e-cigs went back to cigarettes because they’ve find them to be more satisfying (and less expensive, we work with low-income families so cost may be a bigger factor here than for most). So, it makes sense that e-cigs could be considered a gateway. However, I hope you’re right that those who start with e-cigs won’t be tempted to start smoking. Congratulations on quitting, by the way.

That’s cause most studies use crappy cig-a-likes.
The very kind that big tobacco companies are now selling(Blu, Vuze, Mark Ten)
Likely the only kind that will be allowed after the expected FDA regulations.

From my experience those that want to stay off cigarettes after trying cig-a-likes upgrade to eGos or even higher end “Mods”… mine, for instance, looks nothing like a Cigarette:

**Picutre of an nZonic & Nimbus**

I have been smoke from for 20 months and I have no desire to ever smoke again and have reduced my nicotine to just 1/3 of what I was using when I started vaping.

Thanks for this insight. You’re right, although our study doesn’t provide e-cigs (the participant chooses and buys for themselves) they almost all have used “cig-a-likes” so far. Can you describe how it feels different? And did you start vaping with equipment like this or did you also start with cig-a-likes?

Put it this way: If i take a big long hit off mine… I can’t see my computer when i exhale.

I get a ton more vapor, more flavor and more satisfaction.

I did initially try a cig-a-like… stayed off cigs for a week… then went back because I didn’t know anything better existed.
(I skip this part when telling my story and just say I haven’t smoked since getting my first eCig… because I feel cig-a-likes are a bit of a joke)

I researched online found out about eGo types and bought a kit… A Totally Wicked Tornado-T to be exact

Haven’t smoked since.

I stuck with eGos for about a year… then moved on to “mechanical” mods and “rebuildable” atomizers

From what I’ve seen most of the studies conducted are flawed because of the issue you expose here…

The people doing the studies don’t know what they are studying.

The results end up flawed because of biases and flaws in the design of the study that the researchers were not even aware existed.

For instance most studies done on the vapor have used either the raw liquid, or a machine that’s normally used for smoking… taking no account of the mechanical differences between vaping and smoking or the mechanical limitations of an eCigarette.

If you ever chat with that guy again -- how about seeing if you can find out if the federal study included e-hookah in their results. Nicotine free hookah is popular with teens and 0-nic e-hookahs are sold in stores. The young adults I've spoken with are only using nic-free.

I don't know if these e-hookahs are under the California laws against selling e-cig gear to minors, but they are the exact same technology, so actually should be under that law. They are e-cigs with a different label. Some do have nicotine.

Has anyone found if Casaa has a statement about that study?

I recall similar survey's back when I was a wee one --- and they were worded such that if one had ever even taken a drag, they would have to say YES.

Have you ever gone over the speed limit on the freeway? Studies show 95% of teen drivers speed on the freeway.

2 cents.
