Today is my first day vaping...using my new 510. In just one day....I have gone from 40 analogs a day down to just 6 today (from 3:10AM until now). This is amazing! :D

I have started out with the 18 mg juices and carts....I have noticed that when I attempt a good drag with a lot of vapor, I start coughing my head off. Is this normal, or do I need to cut the nicotine level down below 18mg?

I wish my units would give me that kind of throat hit!:p

But I believe this is normal, I cough occasionally when I take a large hit but I dont have a good unit like your 510.

I would consider trying out different liquids.
Some are smoother, harsher, give different amounts of vapor and thicker/lighter vapor.

You also might just need a day or two to get used to it.

If all else fails, go with a less powerful e-cig like the 901(my current favorite)
If you find one you like better, Ill buy your 510 off your hands!(only half serious)

Glad to hear about your success using your device

In the beginning I use to cough too. But then again I smoked so much that i coughed just taking a deep breath. This is something that will take a little getting use to. Some say that the nic level don't make a difference on throat hit that it is Ph levels in different liquids. Maybe try just hitting on some straight PG or VG. See if one of those two are causing you to cough. Then maybe play with strengths. Do the process of elimination thinggy.

Coughing is natural after quitting smoking. When you finally quit the analogs for good, your body wants to reject all the crap you put onto your lungs after years of smoking. Its a defense mechanism. Vaping expedites that process. You'll be coughing up all sorts of funky sh*t in the next several weeks.

Thanks Big Tobacco.

I have been smoking "light 100" analogs....and I don't know what the nic mg. is for them, so it makes it hard for me to figure out an equivilent in the various juice strengths. And now I might have to cut down the juice I already have ( 3-15ml bottles) to keep from having to throw it away. The juices I have are with PG...that might be causing some of the coughing too, but I don't know for sure.

Heh! Yeah.

This afternoon, I hacked out my car keys for my 1976 Plymouth Fury that I'd lost back in '85.

I started vaping one week ago yesterday, deeanne59, and for the first couple of days I was coughing on big drags as well. I also have the 510. After that though the coughing stopped. It may have something to do with inhaling something "different" from analogs. A body adjustment thing.

Congrats on your reduction in analogs, too! I was a pack a day for 23 years and went down to one or two regular cigs a day immediately. Today I went 24 hours analog free. I celebrated with a real cigarette. :D

Let me say welcome to the 510 club!

Coughing is natural to most of us when we first started. Just take slower, softer, longer drags. Vaping is also a technique that does take a little learning.

I was a 2-3 ppd menthol lights 100s for several years.

I vaped 18 mg nic when I firsted started with e-cigs. Then when I got my first manual switch e-cig (Dura-C), I found I had to go down in nic strength because the throat punch was just too much for me. That was over a month ago and I've been doing fine with the medium strength nic.

well, with this 18 mg juice, besides the coughing...it is causing my throat to be a little "scratchy" and the sides of my tongue to burn slightly. I might need to switch to VG...or at least cut my 18 mg PG down with it for right now.

It might be the type of juice I am getting as well. Is there a difference between retailers or sources for the e-juice?

Besides going through this learning curve to vaping....I just read the thread about the possibility of e-cigs getting banned or controlled by the FDA. This really burns me up, because I have FINALLY found something that works getting me off of analogs, since I have tried everything else on the market and failed!

Welcome to the forum deeanne59,
Vaping will be a transition period for you. It is a lot like when you first started smoking. You couldn't do it very well at first, but you kept doing it and your body adjusted. Keep in mind, when you are vaping, you are no longer polluting you body with tar and carcinogens. Your lungs will start to heal and it is normal to go through some hacking and coughing. To follow up on a previous post, yes PG can cause allergic reactions but is considered rare, and symptoms such as a sore throat, from my understanding will be readily apparent. If you over vape, this too can cause a sore, dry or itchy throat, drinking a soft drink or coffee usually helps me if I do this.

You will find lots of good and experienced vapors here who can help you with your journey.

Welcome to the forum -- Nic.

Deeanne:

I just got my 510, and can finally see myself going a day without a cigarette. I have yet to go 24hrs without an analog, but when I do have one, I realize they are much less satisfying than my PV.

The 510 provides full vapor, a great throat hit, and i can even feel that "tingly" sensation in my lungs I used to get from analogs. I love it! I cough, on occasion, but (on my 2nd full-day of my 510 use) I am becoming more accustomed to vaping this unit, and I am sure that will pass.

I am stoked about this model, and can finally stop scouring the threads and watching video reviews to find a model that 'might' work for me. I also love that it comes with 2 complete cigs, but know, that 2 is never enough.

Come payday, another starter kit, a pair of spare batt's, and a USB passthrough should provide me with enough peace of mind (for now)

What kind of juice do you use (stregth, flavor, supplier)? I have 18mg Hilton (slightly cut) from RuyanDirect, and have 2 bottles of 36mg on the way. Hilton is by far my favorite, but i thoroughly enjoy Original Tobacco, and Tennessee Cured from JC (the only 2/10 I actually use).

If your tongue is burning, it is most likely because you got some liquid on it. Sometimes these E-cigs will seep a little from the cart. It will go away.
Vaping is something that gets better with time and experience.

Most E-liquids comes from China. Unless you are using liquid from Johnson Creek which is the only U.S. made smoke juice, or Totally wicked, which is made in the UK. Totally Wicked E-liquids USA is based in florida. Both are good E-liquid manufacturers. If you find that PG is not for you, you can get Non PG Liquid from Johnson Creek, which is a vegetable glycerin based E-liquid.

Deanne, you may be having a reaction to the PG, but I think the scratchy throat is also pretty normal and will eventually go away. I would recommend trying some VG, I did that as well, but I now use PG without any issue. I think your throat is just getting used to it. I still find it gets a little scratchy once in awhile if I'm hitting my PV frequently, but for the most part it has been just great since the first week or so.

The numbness in your tongue could also bee from liquid. You have to drag on the PVs differently than an analog and I found my lips were also numb for the first day or so until I figured things out. :) You have to take slower drags and not try to puff like you did a normal cig.

Keep up the good work, these things are wonderful, and even better once you get them figured out. I'm currently using a 901 and 801 and I have a 510 on the way. I can't wait to get it. I think you started with one that has a greater throat hit, so it may take just a little more to get used to. Good luck to you, it will get better. LOL

To ImYourSalt:

I am using e-liquids I purchased from "e-Smokey Treats" ....I have 15ml bottles of Vanilla, Chocolate, and Tobacco flavor 18mg.- plus 18 mg carts of Marlboro and tobacco flavor.

To NicFits and VelvetVisions:

I think I might be trying to "rush things along" a little bit. Yesterday was my first day, and it is the first time that I have been below 2 packs a day without having MAJOR nicotine withdrawal. I find that I am LOVING the flavors and the whole vaping experience (even though the manual switch took some getting used to). I think I am just too excited, wanting to become a non-smoker and wanting to become a Super Vaporer!

Oh....Mamu:

I have you to thank for getting me to join the 510 club. You were the one that suggested it..LOL. I feel like the 510 might be all I need, if I can get supplies for it. I might need to get an SD along with it as backup.....in case of a ban. I just bookmarked the Lorann Oil website, thinking about trying to mix my own using unflavored juice with the Lorann oils and VG.

thank yew - thank yew - so nice to get good feedback! :)

I also ordered a couple of 510 starter kits and parts from eastmall.net. They rock!! Good prices, lots of stock, great liquid (got to try spearmint if you like menthol, heck even if you don't like menthol the spearmint is yummy!) Eastmall.net is in China, so it takes about 7 - 10 days (sometimes longer) to get your order.

I just ordered my second screwdriver. Now I need to remember I have all the toys I need... I have all the toys I need... I have... LOL!

Dont' sweat the FDA for now - that ban talk has been around for a LONG time!!
