I had a Segelei/Ovale mod whose battery compartment was extremely tight for housing the dual 18350 batteries. Annoying to say the least. It helped "a little" to use a credit card to slide the batteries in between the flimsy springs it used. Needless to say, I no longer use that mod because of its annoyance when changing batteries. It's a poor design by the manufacturer.

Does it still scratch them if you use the lanyard to pop them out?

Yes, they pop out violently. I use the lanyard very carefully, the gently try to pry the battery out with my hands.

Ugh that's sad news because other than that it's an amazing box mod and haven't seen anyone else complain about it.

Here is the photo

If there is room, you could try wrapping a piece of electrical tape around the battery, creating a tab to pull them out......

It has a lanyard ribbon that does that, the problem is it's still so tight in there that when it's pulled out it's scrapped on the metal connector to the box mod

You might be able to carefully compress that metal connector with some pinchers or pliers to allow more space for the battery.
