My Woodie squonker is finished and working like a charm. In fact it hits like freight train.

I started off with wet sanding with 1200 grit and once I got all the blemishes out and had a perfect flat surface I did a final wet sad with 2000 grit and then polished it with a very fine polishing compound on the buffing wheel till it had a mirror finish.

Now the fun part, wiring

It took me a good couple hours getting the contacts in the right position and creating some channels with the dremel to get the wires in place. I then realized that my button extends a bit too deep in the interior and creating a problem for the bottle. Now I realize that next time Google sketchup may actually help me avoid these problems. Anyway I bent the contacts of the button and the bottle now fits just fine without any issues squonking. It was all wired up and tested for any shorts. I also put some red liquid tape to isolate all the contacts.

Next was the best bit. Filled up the bottle with my all day everyday vape RoarVapor Strapple, slapped on a freshly charged VTC5 and sat back and enjoyed the fruits of my labor. Finally a Woodie with the Odin. Bliss

Here it is up next to 2 of my Woodvils for comparison. Ok it doesn't have the magic dose of porcupine dust but hey, it lets me enjoy my Odin

Woodie squonker

........and since I have another Odin looking for a new home here is the next piece of lumber that will be converted to a squonker.

Next squonker

I just want to add that since this is pretty much a copy of a Woodvil I will never sell it. Once again this is a hobby and strictly for personal use, I will not make any mods for anyone, flying is still very much what sets food on the table.

Thanks for all your nice comments.

PS Hope I've inspired Rob to make for us some flush 510 Woodvils

This in the new mech Woodvil makes it even more special. Not having a LP Grand I missed out on all the buzz on other RDAs and now I find out what the hype is about. :)

awesome job captain, a few times I seriously thought of building my own from scratch but I just can't bring myself to do it, even for personal use I just wouldn't feel right building someone elses design. don't take this as slander nor that I think you should feel that way of course, not at all, not saying there's anything wrong with what you did for personal use, wish it didn't bother me so much or I'd have an army of them by now, instead I just keep buying real woodies to hack up :p

I'll tell you that would be a feat and I highly recommend you don't attempt that with Stabilized wood because it will be a nightmare to chisel the interior space as it's really hard

I was actually going to do this out of a piece of deadfall or something. I had a box not to much bigger than a woodvil made of driftwood and I'm pretty sure I'll be able to whip something up. It will more than likely end up in a round shape, but I've been scheming.

turbocad6 I know exactly what you mean I too had serious concerns about this issue and decided I'll just do this one to see what a flush 510 woodvil would looks like. Do I feel good about copying someone else's design. No, neck no and that's why I emphatically stated I'd never sell this because it's just a copy.

I have never built a mod before nor intend to make mod building a hobby, I neither have the time nor the inclination to get into this, I'll leave that to the experts like Rob. Perhaps you're right that this was in principle wrong however I assure you it was done with no ill intentions. Call it a personal challenge, call it outright curiosity, heck it all started because I love the woodvil design so much and I just can't enjoy them with my favorite atty.

Anyhow I agree with you there is a moral issue here and that second piece of birds eye maple burl will be a totally different squonker since I already have it.

Thanks for your kind words

It is a credit to the wonderful people here that no flame has erupted. It is very clear that this is a tribute, not a clone. Nice work, and good inspiration to keep improving what is already fantastic! That spirit is what keeps rob on on top, for sure. This forum is so genius, with a culture of sharing ideas with the people who can bring them to life! I love it!

Beautiful work Capt. WOW! And kudos to Rob for the concept. I do love my Woodies.

Wish my wood shop was not in storage and the old body would let me setup/use it again. Some of the left over exhibition grade woods I have from the WC2K days would make for some exceptional wood mods. But it's not in the cards I've been dealt.

Woodworking is certainly a great pastime, hope you can get back into it one day

Thanks for the thought, but it'll never happen. I'm OK with no longer making the custom animal calls I did for over 50 years. But not being able to make a wood mod or two after seeing yours...
