BUGS!!! Now that I don't have that perpetual bug repellent stick in my mouth, the bugs are driving me nuts. I may have to go back to buying cheap cigars to hang in my mouth while fishing or working outside if I cant find something that works as good as smoke. Any ideas...and remember, I have D.C. bugs around here...you know...the ones that get in your face and down your throat whether you like it or not and never go away!

What do you southerners do down in swamp land? I know you guys have mosquitoes the size of birds down there...8-o

I've always heard people saying smoke keeps mosquitoes away, but I never had such luck. I'd smoke like a freight train and blow smoke all over myself, but still got eaten alive by mosquitoes. Get you some 100% DEET spray from Wal-Mart - that stuff works wonders!

Absolutely true. If its not a myth then it works like crap. Hope the OP find a solution.

Mosquitoes see me as one thing - Lunch! The best bug repellent I've used was Skin So Soft by Avon. When I was in the service we always had someone whose wife was an Avon Lady and we'd buy up her stock for going out into the field.

I have heard about that too...hmmm...AVON LADY!!!!

I miss it too. I am a huge fan of morel mushrooms and this year is going to be something else. the deet doesn't work for many of the bugs and I really hate putting it on. The mask doesn't work because I can't see the morals through it as well.

What I have done is gone and bought a ThermaCELL it runs off of butane and vaporizes a bug repellant you carry it in a holster like device.

Now how ironic is that? I'm replacing the cig yet again with a vaporizer. It comes with a big bottle of butane and the Butane heats a patch full of bug juice it puts off a bunch of vaporized bug juice. It works the best with the least wind.

skin so soft from avon is the BEST, those bugs see my daughter as lunch too and when my hubby deploys i always have bottle in his bags.

Tara

If I am deeling with skeeters skin so soft is pretty good stuff. I wish it worked as well on black flies and those are the ones that really welt me up.

Thats the case with us...me and my son get eat alive and my daughter stands there laughing at us without 1 gnat bothering her.

You have to find an Avon rep for that stuff right?

Thats where we ride too...between the Potomac and the C&O canal.

Hey, maybe you can find, or someone else knows of, a particular vapor flavor that the bugs really don't like and would serve to deter them!!
Now that would be 'Priceless Info" to many I would guess!

Smoke is like BBQ, and Skin So Soft is just salad dressing for the mosquitos around here. Smoke is good for most every bug and fly, except mosquitos, and of course those giant flying smoke-beetles that are actually attracted to smoke and seem to always show up and repeatedly buzz you when you smoke(d) outside.

Yeah I guess they like that we vape too.

Would have to smell as bad as cigs huh? Maybe Avon will make us "Vape So Soft"

Brad and voltaire....Exactly!!

citronella oil works for bugs they don't like the smell of it really good my mum has used it for years as shes allergic to stings

^^^^
This
You can buy HUGE mega citronella (look for lemon) candles in camping stores. Just light it while outside and voila - bug free zone. Smells nice too.
