[FONT=Trebuchet MS,Bookman Old Style,Arial]Mark Fradin and Jonathan Day of the University of Florida tested 17 nationally marketed mosquito repelling products under laboratory conditions. They asked 15 volunteers to stick a forearm coated with repellent into a cage containing 10 mosquitoes and observed how much time
elapsed before the first bite. Products containing DEET repelled best, and the more DEET they contained, the better they worked. Off! Deep Woods, which contains 23.8 percent DEET, provided the longest-lasting protection: 302 minutes on average. By contrast, Avon Skin-So-Soft Bath Oil failed after 9.6 minutes, on average.

For decades rumor has held that Skin-So-Soft Bath Oil is an effective counter to mosquitoes, yet a 1993 Consumer Reports analysis found it ineffective for that purpose. Because so many people were buying the product for its purported mosquito combating properties, in 1994 Avon added a non-DEET repellent and a sunscreen to the popular bath oil and began marketing the new concoction as Avon Skin-So-Soft Bug Guard Repellent. Avon disputes the 2002 results posted in the New England Journal of Medicine study, claiming its Bug Guard Repellent works for three hours, not the 10.3 minutes for its Bug Guard Repellent and the 22.9 minutes for its Bug Guard Repellent Plus the study found, but a 2003 Consumer Reports analysis found the Skin-So-Soft repellent deterred mosquitoes for only one hour.

Is this the stuff or the regular lotion with no repellent??

Avon Shop - Products

Avon has obviously heard of Skin so Soft being a good bug repellent, seems they've jazzed it up a bit. When we were using it we only had the regular Skin so Soft, but hey, give the bug stuff a try. I didn't know you could buy it online now, must have put a lot of house wives out of business.

Just a comparison here: The FDA says vaping is bad for you, we don't agree, even with study after study by them we still know better. SSS has worked for me for years and also for other people too. Seems that personal experience always wins out, doesn't it?

No Chris...the wives have gotten tired of knocking on doors so they put up their own websites.

Its just like people now are finding out that the old timers were right about their weird remedies for stuff...they didnt have millions and time to sit around and do "studies"...they just did what worked. I definitely will never believe or buy anything Consumer Reports recommends ever again. Everything I bought that they listed as #1 was total crap. They probably get the kickbacks like all the other lying .......s.

I am just wondering if Avon didnt actually screw it up by "improving" the stuff with insecticides. I might get both with and without and if they dont work...hey...happy anniversary honey!!

What about Off flavored E-liquid?

Blech, never mind.

Let us know how that goes Col. lol

I guess if I vaped a high enough mg I could kill the bugs on exhale...no... that would probably kill me too.:(

Dont know what else to do besides not letting my son take a bath for a week and take him along to draw fire...;)

It's not quite the same thing. A study about repelling mosquitos is a much more simple prospect than one about the health effects of vaping. (which is why it's never been done) But I do also have personal experience with SSS, (but not the Bug Guard stuff) and it is quite negative. (see my previous comment about mosquito salad dressing)

I have gotten bug juice with deet in it in my mouth a few times. WOW, not cool at all. I was up in Fairbanks Alaska, were the skeeter is the state bird, and I used some 95% deet and it melted my bic lighter. I am trying to stay away from it as much as possible. I don't mind it on my clothes but I try not to put it on my skin unless I am really getting torn up.

I agree...body chemistry or hormones must have something to do with it as to why some get attacked and others dont.
I understand what your saying too voltaire, and I have used all of the above repellents...but while they do help keep the bugs off of you to some extent they dont keep them little basturds out of your face. I hear that its because of the carbon dioxide we exhale so we would need to exhale repellent...or smoke.

Mosquitoes see me as one thing - Lunch! The best bug repellent I've used was Skin So Soft by Avon. When I was in the service we always had someone whose wife was an Avon Lady and we'd buy up her stock for going out into the field.
Glad I read posts, cuz I was going to say that! SSS works like a dream.
