Your help and thoughts on a build

Hello everyone,

I have learned more than 90% of my vaping knowledge from fellow ECF members. I ran into an issue yesterday so figured I'd hop and see if you guys come up with some thing that Is just not occurring to me.

So I purchased a geekvape griffin RTA with a reuleaux RX200 and some LG HE4 batteries.

The griffin arrived but I'm still waiting for the other two items. I figured I'd try a build on the griffin and run it with my joyetech vtc mini. I did a dual coil kanthal 24 gauge build with about 8 loops. It came out to about .37 ohms.

Here is where I ran into an issue I was hoping you guys can advise me on. The clouds and flavor are great when I vape the above using the vtc mini. But the griffin tank gets very very hot... That got me concerned. Also since I started I've been vaping with my own diy at 6mg nicotine without any issues, but the griffin also seemed to get me light headed, like it seemed to be so efficient, maybe I was getting more nicotine than normal. Before this I had a kangertech subtank plus attached to the vtc mini.
Keep in mind, I did the entire process twice, building new coils and new cotton just but same result, tank (the glass part of the tank top) gets very hot and pulls seem to get me lightheaded.

Now, could the tank getting hot be because the vtc has just battery and maybe is not strong enough? (Vtc has one mxjo 35 a 3000mah inside)

When I reattach the kangertech plus to the vtc, I get no hot tank and no lightheadedness but I lose the great vape I get on the griffin.

Will the RX200 be better at handling the griffin? Any other thoughts? Thank you so much guys..

I've read through your thread twice but you forgot to mention one important thing: at what wattage/voltage you're running it at. Could it be too high? I would suggest running it not more than 3.8-4.2 volts.
Oh, btw, the Griffin is definitely a better tank than the Kanger subtank plus both in vapor and flavor, imho.

There's no way your tank will get hot at 1 watt.

Oh hey really sorry guys... Like Aceman3330 said, I forgot to mention the most important part. I run it at 40 watts. I don't touch the voltage, because I am in power mode and basically its a regulated mod and won't let me change the voltage anyway in that mode. On the kangertech, on a .4 ohm coil built on the rba portion of the kangertech, I can easily run it at 45 watts without it even getting warm.

What I am concerned about is maybe I am doing something very obvious, incorrectly. Like I said, I even rebuilt two new coils, eight wraps and it came out to about .37 ohms, but it still gets hot.

Truly appreciate your help and guidance...
Thanks.

The Griffin has a a chimney and the fact that your running dual 24ga coils in it will make the tank hot when chain vaping. If you don't give it time between pulls such as 2 to 3 minutes your going to get a hot tank. Nothing is wrong with anything you have done just the nature of the beast with a chimney type atty.

did you fire the coils before wicking? could be possible 1 is heating up way more than the other
that way you would be putting most of the power that should be divided over 2 coils into 1
if this is the case you would pobably be tasting burnt cotton 2

but sub om tanks can get hot

Clydde26, thank you so much. I didn't so much mind it that much getting hot, just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing anything obvious wrong. And as Aceman said, I agree too, the clouds and vapor far surpasses the kangertech I have.

Also, I guess I will go down to 4mg nicotine because in addition to getting hot, the griffin also seems to get me light headed. Guess its pulling much more than the kangertech.

Thank you again Clydde26

Hey ufosnowcat, I did test the coils before wicking and they are both firing ok. I actually followed a couple of vidoes step by step on how to coil and wick it. Initially, I setup the coils vertically, but found it easier to wick if I set them up laterally.

Also, the consensus here and from what I read on "redit" is that these tanks do get hot.. Someone listed the "con" for the griffin as it getting really really hot. Guess, like clydde26 said, its the nature of the beast. Overall, definitely a great tank. The posts make it so freaking easy to attach coils.

if it had been in stock i would have had one, i was doubting between the griffin the serpent and the batchlor
the batchlor was the only one in stock (bit tight draw) but im loving it and the simplicity of the single coil

the griffin is still on the wishlist and im glad you're liking it overall

My turn yet?

Your Griffin build - 24Ga., nice Thick(mass) Slow to heat, slow to cool, Coils(Two of them) Lots of heat being generated and dissipated.
Your Kanger coils Fire to potential much faster and cool much faster.

Redo your build in 26ga. and you should immediately see the difference. Build a bit higher .4-.5ohm with a 28ga. wire and notice how nice the Vape is.
Clouds aren't everything.

As you said, only one Battery in the Mod - Lots of power to heat loss going on.

Your RX will handle the loads longer, but building is key. and Every design needs its own proper key.

Talk about perfectly wording an answer. Thank you crxess, that is great info. I will have to order 28 gauge, I was going to order a couple of items from amazon, I will just add that to the list.

Any suggestions with the 24 gauge I have now? Or is the 28 gauge a must? Thanks a mil...

Save the 24 for a Future RDA, and forgot to mention. The Griffin is excellent at Vaporizing more e-liquid. This leads to More Nic intake. Might want to cut to 3mmg.

Thanks cryxess, That was the second part of my original post. I was kinda dumbfounded after a few hits from the griffin because I really was light headed. It didn't occur to me till this morning though, that it could be so much more efficient (than the kangertech) that I am really pulling in more nicotine. I do DIY on the liquids, so I am going to try 3 to 4 mg. This is definitely turning out to be a great tank.

Thanks crxess...

thanks Sonicbomb... the only reason I kept it at a low resistance, was I noticed the lower resistance allows me to pump up the wattage which in turn gives a warmer and warmer vape. That was a big thing for me because I was trying to mimic the taste and feel of an actual cigarette when quitting even more than the clouds or flavor.

I will try the higher resistance and see if I can get "warmness" as well.

Thank you.
