My hubby is not much of a handyman, thank goodness. So I don't really get to deal with the lovely things you gals posted. He can for the most part fix cars, and unless it's computer related he'll do it himself. But like with the brakes on my car he'll do things like take the warning clips off the brake pad, so now I won't know when I'm starting to need to get new ones. But for a while I'll have working brakes. He also won't let someone else do it if he can do it. I need a new belt in my car, but won't let the dealership do it for $160 when HE can do it, but the problem is he was told over the winter and I'm still waiting for that belt to get replaced.

When we 1st got married I bought a really nice expensive radio for his truck and surprised him by having it installed. He didn't like the fact that someone else did the work. AGH, I really thought I was doing something nice for him.

Mine would be upset if I had done what you did with the stereo :?: But mine would have let it sit in the box for months before he put it in....sheesh....LOL

I have a stero for my car..I had a new cd/cassette player put in because I live in the past and refuse to buy all those darn books again on CD! But in order to use the taken out stereo, you need a code..the car dealership folded it's tents a while back. Now what?

You might try calling a car stereo installer/seller and ask them. They would probably be able to tell you.

The code should be on a sticker in the glovebox...i don't think it says its a code... it should be around 5 digits..

There are two sets of numbers on the back of the radio itself....if you call your vehicle manufacturer and give them those numbers along with the VIN of the vehicle it came out of they will give you the unlock code. The dealer usually keeps it on file but if yours has closed you won't have any luck there anyway.

Most manufacturer's 800 numbers can be found here AUTOPEDIA®: Manufacturer Toll Free 800 Numbers Directory of all automobile vehicle manufacturers for brochures, dealer locator and customer service.

Very rarely your unlock code will be written on the owner's manual, on a piece of tape in your glove box or ash tray, on the inside of your trunk lid, or even on the back of the radio-but it isn't done very often. The whole process is designed to make your stereo unusable if it is stolen from your car and if it's easy to find the code it defeats the purpose of having the code :( so I wouldn't count on being able to find it.

On another note:
Do I wish I had a DIY hubby! The fact that mine is not drives me INSANE. If he were just incapable or inexperienced it wouldn't bother me a bit, but the opposite is true. In his 46 years he has worked as a carpenter, a painter, a roofer...literally a jack of all trades kinda guy-and he has made his living as a mechanic for about a decade now. There isn't much hands on labor that he doesn't have knowledge and experience enough to handle.

However, there are approximately 9,425,671 unfinished projects at my house at any given moment lol. And by unfinished, I mean that he has talked about it endlessly, made numerous trips to stores to ogle and purchase the tools and/or items to complete it, complained about it being too much trouble, and then done about 20 minutes of actual work before abandoning it forever for me to trip over until I give up and shove it all into the shed or yard.

Not much ever actually gets finished unless I either A) figure out how to do it myself or B) pay someone else to do it. I usually choose C) pretending none of it ever happened. I'd have to laugh about it if the thought didn't make flames shoot out of my eyeballs!

Well Thanks all! Lots of good ideas. Maybe I can start hubby on them (give him something to do other then bug me!)
I still think the whole thing is stupid. If the thieves know how to write a vin # then they can get the code. If they steal my radio...then why do I care what the code is? I would just rather the radio had a cable that breaks the radio if it's not removed by the owner or a tech. That would stop smash and grab.

So glad my DH will start projects and finishes most of them. Would drive me nuts if he just talked about doing something!!!

That last parts makes me laugh

Yea, none of it makes much sense...if someone is really determined to steal something they can always find a way. I guess they figure most thieves won't have the nerve to call the dealer or manufacturer in case the ID#'s have been reported stolen? I probably wouldn't think to or bother to call them and report it if mine were taken anyway.

Even the ones with the tether that breaks the radio aren't much of a deterrent. How does the thief know that will happen until after they try to take it-and then you're out a radio either way lol.
