Gosh no. Been basically cough free since I've been analog free. (was a 2 pack a day smoker for over 40 years). Only coughed a few times during my 2nd week. (and it was a great, wonderful, NORMAL cough... one that I hadn't experienced in over 35 years!).
I agree with the poster who suggested a Doc's visit may be in order. I don't know.

Depends on how you feel otherwise, I guess... but it is a well known reaction to quitting smoking. As other have said, the lungs begin to heal, the cilia grow back and after a couple of weeks (usually) you may start coughing up some of the tar that has built up in your lungs (usually mixed with phlegm) . It's not terribly uncommon, but it also doesn't happen to everyone. And yeah, it's gross and scary.

But - If you feel fine otherwise, I would simply keep an eye on it.
If the amount of black content does not lessen over the next few days then I would suggest going to the doctor as a precautionary measure. Or, if it's really stressing you out... then go to the doctor.

How heavy did you smoke? I don't think I've ever coughed up black gunk (aside from that time I shot a chocolate bar up my nose and was hacking up bits that said Hershey...), but I never smoked all that heavily, or for as long as many out there. I'd see a doctor, just to be on the safe side. If you see some blood in there, don't post, RUN!

Weird.. Upwards of 2 packs/day for almost 30 years for me. Never had a "smokers cough" and never coughed up anything. Even after vaping for over 2 months, no coughing up stuff for me.

Just to show how differently we all react :D: About a pack a day, lights or ultra lights, for slightly more than 20 years, and I started developing a smoker's hack this year, and I've been hacking up ick lately, too. Not a lot, and not black, but not fun. :p

I ranged from 3 packs a day to 1 pack a day for about 21 years.

I've been vaping now for just shy of one month. I occasionally have a dry cough that kind of comes out of nowhere, but since I've quit smoking I've never coughed up anything. No tar/blackness, nothing.

The dry cough I didn't have when I smoked, but after I quit it start. Do I feel better though? Sure, just takes time.

SIDE NOTE:::

I went to my Doctor for a checkup on my Gall Bladder. He's aware that I "am" a smoker. Well... Last time I saw him was about 2 months ago for a follow up on broken bones, he was interested in me quitting, but I said I wasn't ready.

When I went in there on Friday 3/5/10, the subject came up again and I told him I hadn't smoked for almost a month. I told him about the E-Cigarettes and he simply said that several of his patients have told him of similiar success stories, and he's glad something is working, and also based on how individuals feel/felt he (suggested) it can't be all that bad with all the positive feedback he's heard.

No, he wasn't endorsing it, he was just generically sharing information,.... but still a local doctor with a Family Clinic in South Elgin, Illinois knows about it and doesn't have anything outwordly negative to say. Hell, he was just happy to see his patients either quit, or switch. :rolleyes:

When I read the Post it reminded me of when i went into Basci training, The day i went in Was the first imte i quit smoking, i remember the Drills telling us dont worry if in the next couple week all of you smokers are hacking up Gunk out of your lungs.... After my first 5 mile run, yup i hack up nasty gross stuff, I havnt had it to bad this time around but then again im not exercizing heavily where my lungs are working over time.

But it is normal for gunk to be hacked up JMO

Pack a day of lights for only three or four years, and I've already developed an awful smoker's cough *sob* I wonder if there's any correlation between that and how quickly the major negative effects would set in (like cancer, emphysema, etc..). The fact that I was so affected so quickly is one of the main reasons I felt like I needed to transition to ecigs!

Don't listen to anyone telling you to "run to the hospital". This is completely normal. Some people smoke for years and years and never cough up any tar, and others will cough up a ton. In my opinion, it's better to cough it up. I mean, were does it all go in the people that don't cough it up? You can't say it just disappears. It has to go somewhere in your body.

I munching on some chocolate dipped in PB, took a pull from the milk carton, and something must have tickled my throat or something. I sort of acted like a pump, with my mouth as the intake and my nose as the output. I must have shot upwards of a quarter of that gallon of milk out my nose. Everything in my mouth went with the milk, including nice sized chunks of dark chocolate. I love chocolate and all, but I spent half an hour trying to get that crap out of my schnoz while not vomiting. Hmmm...chocolate mucus, could it be the next great vaping flavor? :p
