My first dabble with e-cigs today; a 901 and pen-style arrived. On the topic that gets talked about a lot here - volume of vapour they create - they are fine. Loads of "smoke". But this board never talks about the taste. I'm sorry but these are so utterly disgusting. I can't understand why no one has mentioned it before. Bog standard "low nicotine" cartridges. Fortunately, I wasn't really expecting anything else so I can hardly say I'm disappointed.

Try a different flavour, then.

I don't mind the default cartridge flavouring, but I wouldn't choose it unless it was the only one available. Some people like it and some people really hate it. I find it okay, but not it's not a preference. Taste is subjective.

I think you'll find quite a few discussions on flavour -- if you look.

Also, since you have new equipment you might also be tasting the primer fluid that the atomizers are filled with at the factory.

You might want to give things an honest try before you form a judgement. Unfortunately, it seems you had already formed an opinion before you tried.

I've heard lots of people complain about the icky tasting stuff that they come with. The good news is that the ick taste will be gone fairly quickly after you put a new cartridge with some pleasant-tasting liquid in it in there.

One time I smoked mine when it was ready to be topped up and I didn't top it up, and it tasted like burnt hair smells. It was such a turnoff that I couldn't smoke an e-cig the rest of the day. The next day I used a totally different atomizer and cleaned the funky one.

Really? Man, That sucks. I'm anxiously waiting on my first E-cigs and I was just thinking, "What if I don't like it?". Maybe it's the new taste like Julie said, or maybe you got a'hold of some bad juice. I hope that's the case because I just dropped a big amount of money (for me) on some e-quipment. I've also read about how some people feel like crap for the first week to ten days of vaping. That could be a turnoff. I'm still waiting. Sorry Fen.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the liquid that most suppliers use with their starter kits. But, as b00 notes, you're not stuck with that flavor. Just try something else. :)

Curtis--I wouldn't worry too much. As you can see form how busy this forum is, there are tons of quite satisfied e-smokers.

As most people of said, the liquid that most supplier use for the carts are nasty. And most atomizers need to be "broken in" so to speak. I've always had good luck dripping for the first day, that way it gets the nasty taste out of the atomizer, and you get to vape on some tasty liquid :) Check out the reviews on liquid and drop a few bucks for a sample pack or a smaller bottle. You probably won't be disappointed. I say give it a few days and you'll like it more and more.

I'm thinking that it must be either the primer the factory puts on the atomizer, or the sample cartridges it comes with. I had the same experience when I first got my 901 and I agree, I thought it tasted disgusting. To me it seemed like a sulphur taste. But then I put a different cartridge on it (not from the starter kit) and after a little awhile the nasty taste went away. So, don't be discouraged, just hang in there and give it a little time and the nasy taste should go away. I've been using e-cigs for a month now and love them.

I agree...the stock carts suck! But once you top it with something else, it's not bad.

You couldn't get me to vape oriental flavor ever! I did once and that was all she wrote. I don't care if Hugh Jackman is doing a striptease in front of me...although I may be tempted, I ain't vapin' that crap again. But yeah, there are some people here who love it.

I don't do the fruity flavors either. Don't like 'em. I'm more of a 555, Virginia, regular tobacco, coffee kinda vaper. It up to the individual...that's why it's nice to have a sample pack of flavor juice.

I suppose I'd find a conventional cigarette pretty horrible just now as well. It's been 2.5 months since I last smoked. As 3 months is usually the point where I fall off the wagon, I thought I'd try keeping an e-cigarette around the place - something to relapse to but without starting all the old routines of smoking.

On the one hand, maybe I should be glad that I don't like e-cigs; maybe I'm off nicotine altogether. On the other hand, I really pine for the routines and rituals of smoking and would rather take up e-cigs than, oh so easily, pick up where I left off.

If you really want to quit altogether, that will always be the best of choices.

However, if you're still wanting the ritual and routine, pay attention to the multitude of responses that directly address your particular problem.

You've got a new atomizer that probably needs to be broken in. Get all the primer liquid off over the next day or so, try a new flavor and come back and tell us what you think.

Many of us experienced the same issue.

While I'm not loving the flavour of my e-cig either (still prefer "analogs"), I'm hoping to get used to it, and to try different liquids until I find one I'm happy with. Just a pity I ordered 140 cartridges with my starter pack... ><
You can ease into it by simply continuing to smoke some regular cigs and filling in with e cigarettes. It is a great way to cut back on cigs while learning to enjoy e smoking. That's what I did. I did not like the e cig at all when I first got it, but over time, I learned to love it. I am still smoking some regular cigs, but I often now enjoy the e cig more than the regular ones. That is always a good thing, but I put no pressure on myself. As others suggested, the atomizer tastes absolutely awful at first. Take their suggestions to get past that new atomizer taste.

I'm awaiting my first e-cig too...couple of questions about getting rid of the factory/packaging taste...

Could you just wash it prior to use?

Can you dry-run your e-cigs without a cartridge? Maybe get all the parts hot and all the bad vapours out of there without inhaling them...does it need liquid for some sort of temperature-regulation?

Doostin--

Personally, I wouldn't clean a new atomizer. So long as it was functioning well, I'd simply vape to clean out the taste. (It doesn't take all that long--just puff and don't inhale at first.)

And, no, you do NOT want to vape on an empty cartridge/dry atomizer. It's a great way to burn out the atomizer by overheating.
