Well it was going to BOB's this week like I said at the end of last weeks post, unless someone submitted a better plan, and guess what? Misskitty47 came through for us. Her and her husband have offered to let us stay on their family spread in the middle of Idaho. Theres farm land, a sunken gas tank w/generator, livestock close by etc. Perfect little set up once the undead start to walk again. Be sure you have your Black Cowboy Hat and 3 rocks in your pocket before heading that way.
From the sounds of it, looks like her and her husband might be making a US tour with their new toy, so be looking for them...coming to a town near you.

I really like this week's plan. It goes to show that, even when you plan and think you know what is going to happen, something can come up at any time and change things. All of a sudden, MissKitty comes across our path and introduced a whole new scenario that nobody had planned on. Good thing this was a pleasant scenario.

It sounds like a good plan, but we do need to make sure that MissKitty is not one of Mac's casino spies, attempting to lure us to a safe place, only to place us in re-animation programs in exchange for shrimp and a warm bed. He's been know to be tricksy like that.

You mean there aren't already zombie hordes lurking in Idaho? I crossed that state at night, with a full moon, and a slight dusting of snow on the ground. Creepiest landscape I've ever been through! It does qualify as low population density though. I joked with my Mormon Aunt and Uncle about the lack of lighting in the state. I asked them if you had to steal a light bulb from Idaho before 'they' (meaning the Mormon church) would let you move to Salt Lake City. They laughed and said no, but it was a good idea! I love my Aunt and Uncle and have the greatest respect for their religion, but come z-day, SLC will eclipse walmart as a treasure trove of supplies. Every Mormon family has several years worth of supplies for every family member stored in their house! They might have some strange beliefs but they know how to prepare for the end of the world...
There has been some discussion about preparation in some other forums about the best food storage, and there are a lot of recommendations for visiting local LDS canneries. MREs are light and great for a 72 hour bag, but what about long term? What if you don't have to bug out? How long will the food in your pantry last? Before I got married, my son and I could have lived for a good year . . . but I just assessed our situation this weekend, and we are pretty much screwed. At least we have a ton of coyotes within a couple hundred yards of our house most of the time, but how many, and how long would they last, or would they quickly get scared off if hunted? We really have to get with the program on that part . . . I am now, officially, taking over the shopping for the household.
True . . . and I hadn't even thought about the fact that they would be scavenging off human corpses. Right now they pretty much feed off livestock and pets. I don't have any idea why people have outdoor pets around here.

To get my wife on board, while we were eating dinner tonight, I asked her how long she thought we could survive if Hood or the Sisters were to blow. It scared the crap out of her.

There are several videos on youtube showing "mormon women teach food storage" showing how they organize it all. - This all reminded me of my childhood - when doing a year's worth of canning fruits & veggies was normal. Our basement always had enough home canned food & smoked meats (as well as a deepfreeze full) to last a very long time-not for an emergency-just as a matter of self sufficiency. Right now, we have lots of canned beans, meats & top ramen. I think our bigger concern will be water. I can store a few gallons, but there isn't much room to keep it. I've been reading up on how much chlorine to use to keep it from getting gross. I remember when Mt St Helens blew, and I (stupidly) decided to drive through the ash from Seattle to Portland to check on my Dad. Portland was hit much worse than Seattle and it was surreal - people wearing breathing masks and walking/bicycling around the brown haze in total silence. It was scary as heck, but I don't remember that getting food or water was a problem. Worse was the damage to your cars engine from driving in the ash cloud as my Dad yelled at me about as soon as I got there. 
To get water in western washington only requires you to walk outside, tilt your head, and open your mouth for 9 months of the year so I wouldn't worry too much .

I saw it for the first time in person last year and it's still pretty barren. 30 years later and you can still clearly see the blast radius from the standing tree line. It kind of like the exact opposite of the grand canyon, the former creates a quiet depression at the destructive power of nature while the latter creates a sense of wonder at the beauty of natural destruction. I don't know why it seems that way to me, maybe I'd see it differently if there was a chance the grand canyon was going to eat my home.
