you done talked me into it...Quantico= ZPOTW

now, missile silos in my area? nice!! but i cant afford those prices

I don't think any of us can afford Montezuma's Castle either. The beautiful part is that the banks will close when the graves start opening :D A little more research showed me that those aren't the only silo's they built, just the first ones which were obsolete just before they managed to finish them :p. They used the same style for all the later silo's, just on a smaller scale up until (I'm guessing) the 80's. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them are still operational today. If you don't think you can make it there, you can always gather your close family together, rent/buy a back hoe, and do some excavating closer to home. I'd just recommend that you not use the same style of "HEY LOOK AT ME" entry door and hide it somewhat.

or you can create a pitfall plain and use the spare dirt to add to a wall

Walls require defenders and gates if they're too high to climb. If they're too high to climb... it's a prison. The good part of digging a hole and pulling the dirt in after you is, anyone who wants to find you has to first know you're there, and secondly has to remove just as much dirt as you pulled in after you. Some of those missile complexes had 16 or more separate rooms connected by a tunnel network. Building from the ground up (no pun), you could also include 16 or more separate entrance/exits to each room and rig each tunnel with a blast door or even collapse the connecting tunnels.

If you don't feel comfortable with pouring structured concrete domes, you could also use shipping containers properly rust proofed and connected by either more containers, concrete, or metal tubes for tunnels. Whatever method you use, make sure you have provisions for clean water and air in, and waste out. If you're planning on really long term, look into adding garden space as both an air scrubber and waste processor. That means you'll have to have some sort of power for lighting (and plenty of spare bulbs) or a really complex light refraction system that's tamper proof.

Yes, those containers. Now picture them laid out like a habitrail with multiples welded together if you needed additional width or height with access provided between them via cutting torch. They're very sound structurally, and could handle being buried underground so long as you don't go too deep. It's not a new idea, people have been doing similar things in Europe for awhile now and it's starting to catch on here in the states, if only as above ground level homes.

Just a couple companies specializing in the conversions for above ground use. You could probably contact them about below ground or earth contact styles as well. These would also be perfect for off the grid hideouts as well since some of them incorporate water catchers and solar panels into the roof design.

Hahaha! Like a human hamster maze?!? That's a good one. Can we build a giant wheel inside to get some exercise? :)

I don't know if you saw the last episode of Mythbusters where they were doing the Valkarye assassignation (sp?) attempt but they were burying one of those shipping containers to see if an underground blast would have killed Hitler... anyway, the thing collapsed under about 3 feet of dirt. The human hamster maze might work above ground, but I wouldn't trust it underground.

We used to convert those into mobile offices...1 container=1 office

never thought about living in them or burying them...I think to be an effective z hunter, I will need to stay above ground and kick some undead ...

I believe we have decided on Quantico as this week's VPOTW. I will cast my vote that way at least.

So, this submission is for consideration next week...

The zombie apocalpse has begun! So, why not grab yourself your own private island?!? They're literally everywhere!

Here's one in Minnesota...

Here's one in Brittish Columbia...

Here's one in South Carolina...

Besides the obvious security advantages to being reachable only by water and being able to see anyone or anything coming for a distance... I'm pretty sure zombies don't swim. Swimming takes skill and technique and those are two skills I've only rarely seen in zombies.

Also, anything near water is going to have a lot of marine life. Fishing and hunting the animals that eat fish is always easier near water. Not to mention that coastal areas are usually pretty moist, rain wise, and therefore fresh water is usually close by even to the salt water properties.

Many private islands are so remote they come prepared pre-stocked or at least have the capability to be stocked sustainably for long periods of time. Some private islands have wildly elaborate mansions with wildly elaborate pantries and cellars to match. But of course any stockpile will eventually run dry. So, how do you get to and from the mainland for (monthly?) supplies?

Might I suggest... your brand new sailboat!

The odds that every yacht owner will make it long enough in the zombie apocolypse to set sail is slim to none. There's gonna be a couple of abandoned boats in port cities. In addition to not requiring gasoline it will also open up travel to other islands; potentially very long distances away. Plus if you get a big enough boat it can serve as a kind of secure base itself for short periods of time.

Questions, Comments, Suggestions? What do you think?

Zombies don't have to swim, they can just walk on the bottom to where they want to go...

On the containers collapsing, I'm surprised since they're rated for stacking full containers up to 8 high! In fact there's a dormitory building in Amsterdam built entirely from them and it's working so well they've extended the lease out to 2018. Perhaps it's a matter of evenly distributing the weight across the top of the framework vs directly onto the 14 gauge metal roof. Maybe the 'fridge style containers would hold up better with the additional benefit of insulation and a power grid.

Yes they do walk on the bottom but only for so long, dead or dying tissue isn't water tight like unwounded living skin thus making zombies in pursuit underwater victim to degeneration and dissmemberment...which leads to contamination of any water they happen to be in which leads to sealif contamination so fishing becomes obsolete in most bodies of water...but private stockpiling is BRILLIANT!

But also infection can be airborne by our fellow untrained survivors who incenerate zombies and where those islands inhabit...and PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong I'm no geography expert but those all are in warm climates where desease thrives in the air

I do like the corregated box swimming pool. :glug:

I don't think Minnesota has ever been accused of being a "warm" climate, though I understand it does thaw for a few months in the summer.

But, if Minnesota is too warm for you, here's a nice little cottage on a private island in Alaska...

P.S. All these places are for sale, the islands and the houses, so they're probably empty. Always a bonus.

I would love to make a a labryinth out of them, price wise what does one cost? Also would this withstand a bullet?

I'm feeling zombie plan of the week here;-)

The company we were converting them for was buying them on the cheap $2-3k a couple years ago. When we got them, we would cut out windows and doors and install them and we also left the cargo doors alone. They were mostly used on job sites for a foremans office, 1/2 for the foreman and 1/2 for tool storage. The wiring was simple, usually 2 circuits- outlets and lights, but every now and then they would run A/C in one.

As far as being bullet proof, for the most part, I would say no, but definitely bullet resistant. Small caliber handguns probably wouldnt penetrate the steel, but the larger ones, I guess it depends where you shot it. If I was inside one, I wouldnt want to shoot a gun for fear of it bouncing around inside with me in it though.

Now, onto the islands...

I am liking the island plan, cause as mentioned, zombies cant swim. Some movies would have you believe that zombies can walk on the bottom of the ocean or lake floor. This is not the case...when it warms up, walk into a lake or the ocean and tell me if you can just walk along the bottom. Watch CSI and tell me if the dead people sink or float. They float. So walking on the bottom will be impossible.

But this brings me to another question: animals- are they immune from the z virus? Most movies would have you believe that animals can not get infected. Some show that anything with blood in it can be infected. I believe that the animals WILL be infected if they come across the virus. So, what does this do for us? It means that as soon as the undead decide to go swimming, either to get to an island or just because they fell off a bridge or what ever, it wont be too long before we have zombie great whites. And for us down here in the south, zombie gators.

My theory is when zday breaks out anything that hasn't been caught from the ocean yet is a nogo.
Why?
Zombies fall in water- zombies contaminate water- fish thrive in the contaminat- making them zombie fish or zvirus carriers.

Now to the island plan..turns out I made myself look like a fool lol because I didn't read all the locations lol.
But I honestly feel like this is going to be a risky deal because others will do this and want their own island

And we all know hostile humans are more deadly than zombies themselves

Thats my main point with the military bases, schools, prisons, sams clubs etc etc. Anywhere that will attract a large number of people will also attract a large number of zombies. then you will have to fight both the alive and the dead/undead.

My mountain plan is looking better all the time...spring fed lake, can see for miles, enough open land to plant veggies and plenty of meat to hunt. Plus, being away from people the likelihood of the zombies finding me are slim.

I was kinda surprised at how many images there are for Zombie Sharks on Google. This seems to be a real concern...
