It's scary that I came up with that in about a 20 second time span and then it occupied the engineer side of my brain for hours. Logistics for gearing the wheels to the generators, digging access tunnels and pits for repairs (still working that part out to minimize infection threat), capacitance discharge electrified fence and recharge rates on a per 10' section basis, optimum/maximum tread path length and degree of inclination... I kinda wish there would be an outbreak just so I could get some practical experiments in! Maybe I could sell the idea to Toyota since they're big on 'green energy' commercials lately :D

Zombies can hekp us make the first self sufficient theme park!

Second Place is Dead Last

I decided to go very basic this week. Having all these plans wont do you any good unless you are prepared, in advanced, to get to some of these places. So this week's plan "The first 72 hours".

The first 72 hours will decide, for most, if you will live or become zombie food. Hiding from them wont do you any good, eventually you will need to get out of your hiding spot and search for food and water. Having a basic plan in advanced, is your best option. Its going to take time for Chuck Norris to come and find and save everyone, so dont rely on that either. Self preservation is key.

I suggest having a well stocked, well thought out bug out bag. (look on youtube for suggestions on what to carry)
Some use a 3 day bag, others plan a 10 day, the point is to be prepared.

The next part, clothing choices. Surviving Z-day is going to be tough enough without trying to be fashionable. Pick clothes that are easy to move in and that are made well. Choices like what kind of shoes/boots to wear. What kind of outer wear, like jackets in cold climates etc. Remember Z-day is not a fashion show. But always add a black cowboy hat and you will look fine.

Also, now is the time to think of weapon choices. Having to leave your home front and your stash of weapons/ammo etc. What will you take with you? Having an AR or SKS is fine, but try to carry that, your bug out bag and 1000 rounds of ammo. Yes you can pre-load magazines and carry them in a vest, but eventually, ammo will run out. I think the main weapons for long term zombie survival will be edged weapons. Leave the guns and ammo for when you find a place to settle down and have time to stock pile. I am not saying that guns wont be used in the first day, as I have plenty to defend myself with, but like I said, ammo will run out.

After things settle down, ammo will be relatively easy to find. There will be people who thought they were prepared only to get picked off by a swarm of the undead. When picking guns, try to keep to the basic, widely used calibers. I loved my 480 Ruger, it was a big, powerful handgun. It would also be a bad choice for zombie survival. Whats the chances of me finding 480 rounds? They are expensive to stock pile and not many people use that caliber, so basically, its a bad choice. Now, 45acp's. 9mm's, 22LR's, 22mags, 38's, 7.62x39, .223, 12 ga etc etc, those are good choices. Ammo is found everywhere, lots of people using those calibers, so the chances of finding that ammo is good.

The first 72 hours is also when you want to start heading to your predetermined spot. Going to Montezuma's Castle? Better be quick and use the first couple of days to make up some ground, headed in that general direction. Eventually, and probably rather quick, gasoline will be scarce. Dont waste it driving around with no direction in mind.

Remember, the best way to survive the initial days of the Zombie Apocalypse is for YOU to rely on YOU. If you can make it past the first 72 hours, your chances of long term survival is good. Make good rational choices, be well stocked in advanced, and be ready at a moments notice.

1. Montezuma's Castle - JANUARY
2. Quantico
3. Private Island
4. Home Front
5a. Cruise Ship
5b. University of Florida
6. Oparus underground shelter
7. Local Bar, make that a local STOCKED bar
8. Befriend Chuck Norris
9. Eliminate Mac before he creates super zombies
10. Zombie powered generator
11. Prepare for the first 72 hrs

***another edit***

Keep your B.O.B. up to date and dont be afraid to make changes. I always have a bag ready, but being from Florida, I was raised to always keep a bag ready during hurricane season. Your bag is not just a zombie survival bag, but it can be used for any disaster- hurricanes, earthquakes, tornado's, social and economic collapse etc. I know the point of the zombie subforum is to joke and have a good time, but this is one thing I really do believe in. Your bag doesnt have to be fancy, a cheap duffle bag will do. Think about things you would need if disaster hit. Keep the items in your bag up to date. Having 4 cans of tuna, with the expiration date 2 years old, is not a good thing. Rotate your food, batteries etc. Check your flashlights from time to time, keep at least one knife in your bag, 1 pair of fresh socks and make sure you have stuff to make fire.

Don't forget training! If you plan on using a gun/knife/bat/crossbow/rock, it's best to know how to use it safely. Nothing will ruin your day faster than dropping a rock on your foot when you might need to run later. Same goes for anything else you might want to use, only more so! I'm not saying that everyone needs to go out and invest thousands of dollars to achieve "Delta force" levels of training, but at least get basic safety and proficiency training to make sure that you don't accidentally hurt yourself OR Chuck. Think of all the times where someone gets accidentally shot in the movies, THAT is the scariest part in my mind. So, don't ask your crazy Uncle to help you, get professionals involved!

I suppose a big duffle bag is a really good idea. I already carry a super jumbo purse that people tease me about. But, when ANYone needs a tissue, tums, black-light, tampon, knife, lighter, handwipe, bottle of gatorade or roll of quarters - Who do you think they turn to?
That being said...the news has been yammering alot about earthquake preparation this week, so I'd better roll the bin out of the garage and check the dates on the tuna cans as Mutt advised.

Edit' to add; I bought one of these crank radios that can also power a cell phone battery; They're expensive, but I found one at Goodwill thrift store for $3.99 - gotta stay frugal even during a crisis!

Definitely good advice there. Know your weapons and how to use your weapons. Go out and train with them. You dont need to get all star wars kid with your training, but definitely spend some time learning what your weapon can do.

TRUE STORY:

My dad was in vietnam in 1965-66. One night they were hit and he was telling me how half the guys there either didnt know how to load their magazines, or couldnt get their weapons to fire because they were on "safe". He says only one man died, but it really opened his eyes to how quick something can happen. Just because you own a weapon, doesnt mean you are proficient with that weapon.

You guys are all correct about the training. My husb bought me gun lessons for my birthday (romantic!)..I have to go make an appointment for the classes. Once I'm trained using their rentals, I'll get to pick my own piece! Wahoo! I'll report back on my progress, if they don't kick me out of class for having bad aim...
And - I WANT a black cowboy hat too!!! I'll check out the local army surplus store -

^You going to Wade's? That's one of the few places I know in the Seattle area that have pistol rentals and I wish they had an indoor rifle range too. Let us all know what you think of them! Just a tip if you haven't shot before, start small and work your way up. It's terrible when someone starts shooting with a larger caliber, they focus more on recoil management instead of focusing on the sights. This can lead to bad, hard to overcome, habits like 'flinching'. A firm, 'non-death grip', is all that's required. There's actually little chance of the gun flying out of your hand and something around a firm handshake amount of pressure is all you really need to prevent it and rubber grips are almost as good as super glue! Start with a .22lr if you think recoil will be an issue and work your way up from there until you start feeling uncomfortable. A well placed .22lr is far more effective than a badly placed (or missed) .45!!!

I'll have to check Wades out, I haven't heard of them before. We were looking at the Kenmore range's pistol classes to start. They also offer archery - so this may turn into a new "thing". I've only done girly things before like dance classes and knitting, so this will be a fun adventure!
Several of my relatives are in law enforcement, but they can't take a civilian to their ranges. Plus they're all a wee bit skeptical about whether or not I can really learn at my "advanced" age of 50...I took this as a personal challenge!!

All up in your grill..
Well we have mentioned this before, and if the Zombie Apocalypse ever happens, this needs to be top priority. Someone needs to find and eliminate Mac. His plan is to harvest the undead and the dead to try and make a race of super Zombies that he alone controls. This is not acceptable. Fighting and surviving once the dead start to walk and feed will be hard enough without having to fight off a super race of mind controlled Mac Zombies. Mac, I love ya like a brother, but when that day comes, your going to be public enemy #1.

1. Montezuma's Castle - JANUARY
2. Quantico
3. Private Island
4. Home Front
5a. Cruise Ship
5b. University of Florida
6. Oparus underground shelter
7. Local Bar, make that a local STOCKED bar
8. Befriend Chuck Norris
9. Eliminate Mac before he creates super zombies

And for those old enough to remember when the Crue came out, an early video of Public Enemy #1:
YouTube - Motley Crue public enemy #1 ( video ) original issue

I don't think this is gonna work out as well for you as you think it will. By the time you get to level 3 of my secret location it'll go something like this:

For all you know, I could already have a secret zombie elite gaurd chilling in the sub-basement right now...

But fear not! My plan is not global conquest! Who wants to rule a leveled civilization, over run by zombies? No, no, no my friend. My plans are far more industrious then that! As doctor Morbid once told you, your best bet is to get in on my revolutionary, super zombie technology while there is still a ground floor opportunity. After you fail to eliminate my minions, the price of my services will be much higher...:p

The lines have been drawn, sides will have to been chosen...And like all good movies, the Evil shall be defeated.

You all will have a choice to make one day, join the evil rankings of Mac and his minion (and perish) or, join the good fight, stay human, and help defeat the leader of the evil resistance.

Hey Mac...we need a poll to see who is on what side

We'll have to set up a forum where each side can discuss their platforms and then let them campaign for 8 months filling the threads with intermittent advertisements 'approved' by each candidate er.. party! This should give the living an advantage since Dr. EZ is still among the living so you better offer up some nice perks Mac (wink, wink, nudge, nudge!).
