“Current cigarette smoking is at an all-time low, which is great news,” CDC Director Tom Frieden conceded. “However, it’s troubling to see that students are engaging in new risk behaviors, such as using e-cigarettes. We must continue to invest in programs that help reduce all forms of tobacco use, including e-cigarettes, among youth.”

You see what he did there? Frieden, as is his wont, called vapingtobacco use,” even though e-cigarettes do not contain tobacco."

Ha. Just came here to post that same article.

The "evidence lockers" for Nicopure and others are filling up. :) I'd like to say it will be like shooting ducks in a barrel but must be careful.

The FDA will only counter this with, "See what we've done?. We ain't broke so don't fix us!"

Perhaps its a prophetic statement ...

Surely they know that a percentage of young people, who now vape for recreational purposes, might well turn to combustible tobacco if that is all that is easily available under FDA regulation ... :(

For comparison - the adult smoking rate (also done every year vs. the every other year for teens):

You can see that 22-24% level that I've mentioned from early 2000's to 2009, when it began to drop to 15.1% this year. It will be interesting how this plays out after 2018.

Well, you could say they are in-sync with the FDA on that point. :- )

eta: I always like to point out that Forbes picks up Jacob Sullum's pieces, usually from Reason magazine, where he's the Senior Editor - the libertarian equivalent to the Left's New Republic and the Right's National Review.

Well, just for grins, I'll play devil's advocate:

Commissioner Califf: Your honor, the FDA took over Tobacco control in 2009. Tobacco use across all age groups has dropped ever since. Our mandate is working.

Next witness please.

2020....

Hearing with ex-Commissioner Califf

Mr. Califf, you said in 2016 that the FDA was responsible for the declining smoking rates, because of the 2009 Tobacco Control Act - but what did you actually do? All I can see is you didn't really 'take control' of tobacco/nicotine use until the 2016 Deeming.

And since your deeming regulations have ended the use of ecigarettes, how do you explain the smoking rates returning to 25% of the adult population and now the teen smoking rates are at 28%???

ex-Commissioner Califf: Well.... I'd point out that the MSA is back on track paying states Billions of dollars. The bonds that states sold went from 'junk status' to Triple A!! Win-win.

If the deeming regs happen as is then I wonder what they'll say when the smoking rate go back up.

I'll punt: "E-cigs were the thing that caused that to happen. If those people hadn't switched to e-cigs they wouldn't have gone back to smoking."

Something like that.

They can do WAY better than that...

They are gonna say that electronic cigarettes got them hooked on nicotine.
And thanks to our deeming regulations we are putting a stop to that kind of thing.

But look at these poor folks who now had to switch to smoking.
Not our fault, it's those evil electronic cigarette makers who got them started.

But we've fixed that problem going forward.
You're welcome.

... except for the scientific geniuses and benefactors to mankind at pharmaceutical research laboratories, who have invoked white magic and alchemy to formulate "good nicotine". We deemed the demons away, as we will now deemonstrate for your deemographic ... :w00t:

Buy your FDA approved Altira/Reynolds/ITG e-cigs today ! :?:

Coming next year, the FDA Philosopher's Stone ...

Sorry, I'm feeling a bit deemented tonight ... o_O

I have been contemplating this very thing while i was sitting here having a vape
and my morning cup of spiced coffee. Vape and coffee go good together and
help get my mind right for the day.
Oops. Now coffee, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, cream and, honey are tobacco
products. Sorry Maxwell house.
