Illumn has a limited number of VTC5s back in stock. If someone knows how to decode the number under the wrapper for the production date, I'd be happy to check as I'll be rewrapping them anyway.

Anybody know if they have more being made or if it's still old stock?

I will be checking the production code when they arrive. I found this:

Sony manufacturing codes.
digit 1: year. Q=2008, R=2009, S=2010 and so on
digit 2: month. A=Jan, B=Feb, ...J= Oct
digit 3+4: day
digit 5: electrode history

Hopefully, this scheme is correct.

Please let us know! I'd pick some up if they're new.

Just ordered mine, hope they are good, and real, as I always wanted to have a pair of these. So far, in order, my best batteries are Samsung INR, Sony VTC4, and last is the Purple Efest. I rate these only on life between charges and how strong they appear to power my devices when freshly charged. If the VTC5 beats the Samsungs I'll be thrilled.

Would be nice if we could get a definitive answer from sony as to whether they are still making the vtc5 and if so who is buying them. As a rule i won't buy them because i just don't want to take the risk.

That might be difficult, as Sony never wanted these batteries to be available for sale to the general public in the first place. I believe they want to wash their hands of the whole matter for litigation purposes.

Just a guess of my own, but I believe Sony commissioned various factories to make the VTC batteries with their specifications. This is relatively common in the battery industry; many Japanese battery companies now have plants in China making their batteries to reduce production costs.

I'm guessing who ever was making Sony's batteries is continuing to make them and sell them to various vendors. Chinese companies are notorious for doing this. The old Sony batteries didn't have Sony printed on them anywhere, so any factory can create a lookalike and sell them as Sony's.

Take all of that with a grain of salt. Just my :2c:
