The post below is 8 months old, so there's a possibility that its already been posted here and if so I apologize in advance. I found this article on Reddit comparing clones to used cars in the sense that it gives you an opportunity to try out a design design cheaply before shelling out for the authentic. I thought it was a useful analogy as there's been much discussion on the clone vs. authentic topic.

http://www.reddit.com/r/electronic_cigarette/comments/296t3r/finally_bought_a_legit_patriot/

Case in point, I just bought a FT Patriot clone for £5, quite literally pocket change. Now I know that it IS worth investing in an authentic. Not because it doesn't have issues, like a ridiculously loose fitting top cap and undersized air-holes. These issues are just because it is a cheap clone and can be rectified (and I actually like tinkering). But because having built on it and used it, I now know that the design suits me. I was looking for an everyday rda that I could stick in my pocket. The lack of airflow options make it less likely to leak, and the all -in-one top cap/AFC allows for easier dripping on the go.

There are quality clones out there that I have seen reviewed, and ones that I have used myself where the machining and build quality are equal and in some cases better than the authentic. I know that designers of the authentic device had the R&D costs to recoup. But I ask myself how some can justify the price tag for these devices, given that they can clearly be manufactured and retailed for around a tenth of the price? An in the case of most mech mods, it is after all little more than a tube with a switch. I know some use slightly more exotic metals bumping the costs, but for most people an extra -0.01 voltage drop makes little or no difference.

Another argument I have seen is that a device manufactured domestically is intrinsically better than one built in the east. I'm of the opinion that a low payed factory worker in west is less likely to do a conscientious job than his or her equivalent in the east. I know this is a gross generalization, but it does hold some weight.

To summarize, I think clones have an important part to play in the market, and I'm personally very glad that they are available as an option.

Man this pop ups monthly.

Buy what you like
I have both
you can buy 6 clones for the price of one of the ones in my sig

Very few authentics are actually made in USA. My passion is greek mods.
in the end the authentic designers gave up caring as demand didnt stop for the real things try to find a lux in stock half the time. And their 200 bucks

Many countries dont subsides their factories like china does.if the artificial exchange rate by the govt over there ever stops they wont be 25 dollars anymore. I say people need to do what they want and quit worrying about how others spend money. It makes me feel good supporting the real guys when I can.

If people actually saw the mods from china before cloning started they would be more thankful of the designers of these mods for giving china something worth copying.

I aggree that clones are good for try before you buy but the following statement is uninformed

Producing them for clone prices requires stacks of money up front. The prices I've seen for authentics looks low to me when I consider the cost of keeping the lights on in the average small shop in the west.

For example, I have a 50 ton iron worker and extensive knowledge in glueing materials to steel. Making sleeves for the Zero is right in my wheel house but I know I wouldn't be able to make a profit and still sell them at a reasonable price.

Thats what im saying, people dont realize many authentics are made in little shops. Look at super t, a legend, cost finally outstripped thr profits and their gone.

The clones arent as cheap as people think. It is the false economy and the fact 1 factory make 50 different items.

Other countries cant do that without hurting their economies. There is no inflation in china. If costs go up the govt just changes the value of the money.
this is why so many countries hate them

This reminds me of a conversation I had with my main girlfriend. I told her after dating 40 or so other Czech ladies I know for sure she's the only one for me. I had to try out a lot of clones before I found the right authentic. She didn't get the vaping reference, but said I am sweet...

And who said chivalry was dead? Consider my faith in humanity restored.

IMO both clones and authentic's are both good. It just depends on how much money you want to spend. Authentic's do work a little better, but are not affordable to many. Clones are a little cheaper quality wise, but the do work. In fact some of them work great. And the best part with clones is that a lot more people can afford to have them.

when you figure that a decent clone setup will run you a little over $100.00 for a battery, mod and topper of your choice. Even that can be pretty expensive for some. And if you buy an authentic mod, battery and topper. You could be over $500.00 depending on what you get. For some, that is never going to happen especially someone who is young and in school.

The paps is a great looking mod, but letting an amp go? Which model/year? I sold my 1979 Marshall JMP 100W combo to pay a utility bill so I can't judge.
