Well all the debate about underage vaping has come to a head.

Just to rebuke the naysayers, unfortunately the FDA IS paying attention.

"On May 4, 2015, Mitch Zeller, Director of the FDA’s Center for tobacco Products, delivered a Keynote Address to an audience of e-cigarette/vaping industry leaders and stakeholders. His remarks included reference to youth, flavors, and marketing"

But several venders have gotten together to help set new standards of responsibility

Seeing as how it is now affecting the industry, would someone like to tell us one more time how it doesn't matter?

I wonder if they fully grasp what they've agreed to.

My thoughts on age restrictions aside, much will depend on who gets to decide what meets these standards in particular:

Marketing Materials:
We agree that marketing imagery, nomenclature, and product naming must not target persons under the legal age of purchase.
Flavors Target Adults Only: We are committed to the development of a sensible protocol to ensure flavors used are not being used to target children.

This sounds like discrimination to me. Somebody should sue the US government for ageism discrimination.

I'm an adult and who's to say that I can't like "youthful" things? I like colorful things. I like candy. I even read comic books sometimes, and I play video games too! :)

I am sure as hell not going to allow any simple minded politicians with dictatorial traits to dictate what flavors I am or am not supposed to like.

I think that they can take their whole "think of the children" shtick and stick it where the sun don't shine.

This isn't the government, though it is in response to perceived governmental pressure, this is a group of vape industry vendors.

@Thrasher, thanks for bringing this up. Honestly I'm still 100% for having as few underage people vaping as possible. There are always going to be kids who don't follow the rules, but let's make sure that there are rules in place. I sincerely hope that my vaping won't be impacted and, more importantly, it doesn't restrict the options of people switching from smoking. Harm reduction should be the ultimate goal. If kids are using a nicotine product unrestricted, it could impact the perception of the community.

yet... when AEMSA was created in 2012 of all of the companies on this vape free youth list only 4 of those companies joined AEMSA and made a serious and provable commitment to self regulation standards including all those mentioned in the vape free youth principles.
This is like closing the barn doors after all the horses are gone, a hundred or so signatures out of literally thousands of vapor companies on principals they don't have to be accountable for really carries no weight. Sorry but that is just how I feel.

Aside from a handful of businesses in the overall scope even the industry itself hasn't thought and from all appearances given the low number of signatures still doesn't think it matters.

IMO lending credence to the idea that ANY flavor is "marketed to" or "targets" children is bad for the industry as a whole. How do you prove that your lollipop flavor targets adults?
