I recommend using a sharp edge like an exacto blade or the pointy end of a toothpick and run it through the thread grooves to get the gunk out. Afterwards, wet down a q-tip with isopropyl and wipe down the threads to get the rest of the dirt off. Wipe dry and then add a couple tiny dabs of Noalox.

A little goes a LOOOONG way.
