Thermal imaging of the Broadsides Mods Brizo mechanical mod

In my recent Minding Your Mechs testing of the brass Broadside Mods Brizo, Immortal Modz Grip, and Purge Slam Piece the Brizo had the highest voltage drop. Where does this voltage drop occur? In the threads? At the contact points? In this video I use a thermal camera to see where the heating...

Minding Your Mechs – Ep16 – Battle of the Brass Side-Firing Mechs – Brizo vs Grip vs Slam Piece

The very, very long overdue battle between the brass Broadside Mods Brizo, Immortal Modz Grip, and Purge Slam Piece. Which has the lowest voltage drop? My sincerest thanks to Broadside Mods, Immortal Mods, and Purge for donating these mods for testing! They will all be going to three of my...

    Charger Test Reports

DO NOT CLICK ANY OF THE LINKS BELOW UNLESS YOU FULLY UNDERSTAND AND AGREE WITH THE FOLLOWING ITEMS IN RED: My test results only represent the chargers I tested. Charger design can change or assembly quality can vary. Any charger can fail at any time, either from an internal issue or from a...

Lithium Werks 30A 1100mAh 18650 LiFePO4 cells are in the testing queue

As I understand it these cells are manufactured under license and use the incredible performing A123 Systems cell chemistry. This chemistry is lithium-ferrous-phosphate (LFP) or LiFePO4 and is the safest of the lithium-ion chemistries we have access to. There are other names for it like...

The “Molicel P30A” battery doesn’t exist! It‘s an Efest creation.

Some web sites were selling a “Molicel P30A” 20700 in what looks like a Molicel OEM wrap but I am told by NPE, global distributor for E-One Moli to the vaping community, that there is no such cell. Efest created this “P30A” by taking cells with plain wraps and printing “MOLICEL INR-20700-P30A”...

    Batteries getting harder to import?

Many of these companies selling cells play fast & loose with the packaging/labeling regulations to save money and time or aren’t even aware of all the requirements for shipping cells. It can cause all sorts of problems when the shipment reaches customs. I’m not aware of any new regulations but...

    RIP LG HE2

Do you have any way to read the bad battery’s voltage? That would help a lot in figuring out what might have happened. All of our round batteries should have a tiny protection device called a CID, Current Interrupt Device, inside that acts as an overpressure safety switch. Like a fuse but for...

In the works: The making of a BLF charger

Thanks for posting that link! A great feature set but the actual implementation will be critical as many chargers have a lot of those features but they do it verrrrrr poorly. Under $50 retail means that it probably needs to cost less than $20 to make, and only if being sold in huge quantities...

Bench Retest Results: iJoy 25A 1400mAh 20350...still obscenely overrated, no better than 18350’s

These tests below only note the ESTIMATED ratings for these batteries at the time I tested them. Any battery that is not a genuine Samsung, Sony, Murata, LG, Panasonic, Molicel, or Sanyo can change at any time! This is one of the hazards of using “rewrapped” or batteries from other manufacturers...

Minding Your mAhs – Ep22 – Li-Ion Battery Myths and Facts has been uploaded

The “calendar aging” and damage, just from time, happens if you rotate or not. By rotating through all of them you can get more from your cells before they drop too far in performance. Otherwise they’re just aging and losing performance doing nothing.

Minding Your mAhs – Ep22 – Li-Ion Battery Myths and Facts has been uploaded

I fully understand and share the desire to have even just a rough estimate :) but if anyone has one of the cells that degrades much slower or much faster than my estimate then my number is useless. There are just too many different cells in too wide a range of storage (external) and internal...

Minding Your mAhs – Ep22 – Li-Ion Battery Myths and Facts has been uploaded

It varies wildly between different cells and different storage conditions (temperature and state-of-charge) and the degree of previous damage which can increase the self-discharge rate. It could be a 1% per month or 20% per month.

External rusting. They’re hermetically sealed so no issues with anything internally.

    Vaping with LiFePO4 (primarily mechs)

If they’re working well for you and aren’t getting more than warm then you might not be exceeding their rating. I recommend not trying to charge overdischarged batteries though as it can significantly increase the chances of something not good happening.

    Vaping with LiFePO4 (primarily mechs)

They’re not Li-Mn batteries though. The China battery companies use “IMR” and “Li-Mn” just as marketing terms or deceptive labeling to entice people to buy their cells based on the chemistry’s better thermal stability. But all of those batteries are NMC or NCA chemistry, not LMO (Li-Mn). But...

The best performing 18350 batteries have a problem...inconsistent performance

I recently tested the YDL 18350D and three sets of cells that, in my opinion, are all rewraps of the YDL cell. In the attached discharge graph you can see how they perform at 10A. If these were Samsung, Sony, Murata, LG, Panasonic, or Sanyo cells the graph lines would be very close together...

    Vaping with LiFePO4 (primarily mechs)

Just a quick note... LiFePO4, Li-Mn, LiPo, all the cells we use...they’re all Li-Ion cells. They’re different chemistry variants (different cathode materials and electrolyte ingredients) but all use the exact same lithium-ion method of operation. What LiMn cells are you using? The...

Minding Your mAhs – Ep22 – Li-Ion Battery Myths and Facts has been uploaded

I’ve been doing some thinking and I hate not knowing for sure. I’ll buy four each of three different cells. I’ll test the internal resistance and capacity of each. Two of each cell will then be put in my freezer, typically at about -11C, and two of each will be stored in the kitchen where it’s...
