I use 100% vg net tobacco menthol from a great vendor and use basic feeding and juice control on rolled cotton boil wick and it's perfect . Mp shows about 2mm of the channels and I love it. So yes 100% vg can be done

I'm coming back to report that I was able to work out my shorting issues and follows dw's advice and got 2 plastic washers - one is above the metal gear on the post to separate the metals from touching and the other goes below the washer to stop it from warping . All problems solved Now onto...
