Those are Banksia pods and with a little imagination and some resin you can make some real nice pieces with them

I have a couple ready. Reportedly hideous to work with. Beautiful if they do work out

They're only good for turning on a lathe, forget anything else
Even then the guy I got them off suggested they are difficult.

The trees are prone to falling on houses in storms. Or breaking and half falling on houses

Yeah the main thing to remember that these pods aren't actually wood, they're seed pods and are very brittle so they need to be handled real gently when turned. I know that they never take off too much material at one time when they turn them so they don't break up. Now the one's which are infused with resin are much stronger and you can really dig into those because the resin has saturated all the open pores and crevices.

And resins aint resins from what I hear. For some reason illumilite isn't legal here. Which is reportedly the better resin for blanks. Cactus juice is all locals can get. (I really don't know what I am saying. Just parroting what I've been told)

I was intrigued by frog's tree fern post some time ago. But guessing it never came to be

Don't try using any of these resins without either a pressure chamber or a vacuum chamber because your blank will be full of bubbles.

i'd make a botch up even with that. Just meant Aussie wood people can't use the good resin, so good native pods are a rarity.

And all that was just trying to steer away from politics, which never ends well :D

Cactus juice is totally different to Alumilite. Cactus resin is very low viscosity and can only be used as far as I know with a vacuum chamber and not a pressure chamber. Additionally Cactus juice needs to be cured in an oven after infusing the wood in the vacuum chamber. Alumilite on the other hand cures in the pressure chamber and is ready in 4 hours

Really don't understand why Alumilite is banned in Oz because it's urethane based and odorless

I only know from blank chasing and emailing wood suppliers.

Bee smuggled me some readyXwick. Which is apparently also not allowed.

I'm mostly a natural timber person. But the worthless blanks need the reinforcement of resin.

Most woodworkers who work with resin use the offcuts of live edges of burls which are otherwise thrown away to cast blanks. Admittedly they do make some really impressive blanks (and I'm speaking from personal experience) but I do agree that pretty much nothing beats a great natural burl.

I fail at timber terminology. But add contrasting sap wood, fungus, or bark inclusions to the natural burl and you can't go far wrong.

That buckeye that eludes you is/was a really nice piece of wood. Stark darks and bright lights

I thought the pics were of your last-night's dinner, Doffy . .. when I first saw them.

I'll just bet that the restrictions for these "tech" products* have everything to do with intellectual property/patents and international agreements and the lack thereof and that type o' slicker.
