Where the hell are these wood pieces coming from? The ones I've been looking at (ebay) look nothing like these...what do you look for in a piece of wood block to make sure it will turn out breathtaking like these?

Uh...I'm sorry to have to ask....but....what wood is that?

It's a lucky Maple. Spalted, but not so bad as to compromise it. And then it looks like it came from a section where the lighter side was dang close to the bark, where you'll get those li'l nippohs. Also, it was stabilized quite well.

Oh, and it is dyed.

I've looked at a lot of "spalted" blocks, but when I had someone check it out, I was always told to find something else
They worried about working on it.
