NY has a reputation for being very confusing for aussies. Automatically applied tips, knowing standard percentage for a cab and the likes.

BUT - If I get great service in a sit down place, I will tip greatly too.

Now, the places that automatically add the tip to your bill if you have like a larger group...that really pisses me off...but I have (for great service) given additional directly to the server.
If I pay for meal by a card, I do not include a tip on there...I give cash to the server.

Which may well be true, but the French are probably the best tippees (if that is a word!). To be fair that probably is especially true in Paris where you are likely to be pursued down the boulevard by an irate waiter if you don't leave a big enough tip
