To me Dubai is an artificial soulless city in the desert. I get the feeling it's like a huge transit airport. Never felt comfortable in it.

As a city it's not bad (considering where you are), modern, very liberal and nothing like other middle east cities. The weather in summer is what kills me

The thing about Dubai is they have their own Rolls Royce dealership at the airport. Ya know, so if you have a long layover or something....
Beirut is liberal...in normal times at least...and hey ..it has lots of lebanese people living there.

Yes but this is primarily due to the nature of the US society and its history. You'll find US citizens with ancestors from all over the world. But in Dubai you won't find nationals originally from Russia, England, Ukraine or the US. These are residents...big difference. In the US you still find some common cultural traits despite the diversity (which is in itself an american cultural trait BTW). So you can find american music, poetry, literature...and the ever elusive "american way of life" which most people in the US relate to on some level, even if they can't define or explain in precise terms

I've never been to Dubai, but I have been to Qatar. Not too bad at Christmas time, but in spring too hot for us. Just as well I live where I do - apparently we are in for a one day heat wave soon (upper 20's C), summer here comes in the occasional small doses
