Well, right now, we're in Norhtern Ireland, not so shire-like. But the trip to Ireland has been amazing so far. Becoming an ex-pat is very tempting.
So, I can't keep up with the thread here, but I can just guess at the shenanigans going on.....
Her mother's parents were devout Scottish Presbyterians and were extremely distressed when their daughter married John Dennison, who was an English Episcopalian.
When her mother, Margaret, was dying of tuberculosis, Margaret asked her husband to promise to raise their three daughters as Presbyterians. He appealed to the U.S. Presbytery and the three girls were placed for adoption in Presbyterian homes in the U.S. My grandmother came to St. Louis when she was four years old. She was adopted on March 6, 1891 by Reverend John W. Allen and Roxanna Purmort Allen. She dearly loved her little brother who also immigrated, but they were separated. He died only eight years later in the Spanish-American War.

My mother's parents were Irish from Cork and Kilkenny respectively. All her siblings were born in Ireland, but she wasn't and is English.

Addit: i just went into my bathroom - as you do, and i'm looking, well squinting really, at some bottle of crap HRH bought and has by the bath.
It says "NO IRISH" on it, which i think's a bit stern especially for a shampoo.

Irish is to showering what English is to billiards. 
Ever played English billiards? It's like they can't afford the rest of the snooker balls and thus have obtuse rules of how many points you can get for various hitting and or pocketing of balls.

Speaking of snooker, we used to play 9 ball with a regular pool ball sized rack on a snooker table to practice. There isn't any such thing as slop playing that way, and when you go back to a pool table the pockets look like garages. I used to be damn good when I was a young man, but haven't played in decades.
I used to be a little bit better than you were. At pool.
But I had the opposite. As it turned out, the table where I did most of my shooting had pockets that were on the large end of the spectrum.
