0.15 ohms build. Yay or Nay?

I've just finished making my best work yet. 27 gauge Kanthal parallel coils around a 1.5mm needle. 6 wraps each and they're coming in at 0.15ohms. By my calculations, that's 28 amps. I'm using Sony 18650 VTC5s and I'm nervous that 28 is real close to the 30 amp limit. There's little to no wriggle room there.


I've done a few test vapes on a battery that was at 3.8 volts and the vapour quality is outstanding. I mean, as RiP Trippers would say, my clouds are sick as t**s. Am I riding way too close to the limit here? If I insert a new battery, is Carl Sagan going to ride a chariot down from the skies and nuke my private parts?

Well, if you're drawing 28A using 0.15 ohms and 3.8v, your calculations are off... You would be drawing closer to 25.3A, which is within the limit... How are you determining the resistance? Calculated or measured?

I would say you found a build that you like now perfect it at a bit higher ohms to be safer

You are of course correct, but with a fully charged battery at 4.2V, the coils would be pulling 28A.

I decided to back right down and remove those coils though because I'm just not comfortable at that level. I'm so pained though, because they were 99.99% perfect. That said, I'd rather live and learn.

Actually, using Ohm's law, 4.2 Volts (Fully charged battery) and .15 ohms = 28 amps and 117.6 watts. However your batter will fall off and the amp draw will fall of as well.

Personally, I wouldn't go that low on my coils. But that's just me. It's always a safe bet to stay away from the maximum so you don't create any potential problems.

That build would be most likely used for just blowing huge clouds, and not necessarily an all day vape. IMHO...

That [cleaning up] on a fully charged battery would be drawing 140A... Not even sure how the VCT5 is able to supply that safely! You sure you didn't mean 0.3? That would be a fairly safe 14A draw on a fully charged battery.

I'm not implying anything except perhaps a typo. I'd rather point someone towards more safety at the expense of the "size" of their clouds...

I hope that was just fat fingered. If it wasn't that build would be pulling 140a on a freshly charged VTC4 (4.2v). Damn near a dead short.

i practice safe vaping at all times. however, with safety concerns aside, i stay away from builds under 0.3Ω due to the heat alone. sure i like a warm vape but anything under 0.3 is friggin HOT. even with mammoth air holes. too burny. and your flavor morphs into a whole 'nother animal. not for me. and im glad i dont like it that hot. because me being me, id push things up to the limit.

It may be ok in certain situations but blimey that is a hot/pushing it vape..

Didn't mean to offend anyone here, just making sure that everyone is clear that those kinds of numbers are just accidents waiting to happen. I don't know any of you personally but would still hate to hear one of you injured themselves in any way when it could have been avoided!

With a VTC4 or VTC5, that build is completely safe. My all day vape is around .2 and totally fine. I have 2 3mm airholes and leave a space under my coil for better airflow and my vape is actually cold.

I know many people that go below .1 ohms with VTC batteries and have never had a single one vent. Lots of people on here are fine with their VV's and clearos and don't understand why some vapers like to go low into the sub-ohms. I like a nice, cool vape with big clouds and that's what I have. A couple drags at 3mg an I'm set for a few minutes.

Not for me but yeah, .2Ω would be safe. It's drawing 21 of those 30 amps.

This, however, is not safe IMO. A .1Ω coil is drawing 42 amps off that 30a battery.

That is the pulse rating chart for VTC5's. They say that it is safe to run them at 50 amps for 40 seconds. The only way this can become a hazard is if someone's mod began autofiring and the owner wasn't aware.

Pulse rate huh? Yeah, ok. I don't want to get burned so I don't play with fire. I build my coils to stay under the continuous amp discharge myself.

And that's your decision. But if the pulse rating wasn't safe, I doubt Sony would advertise it as so. As long as the user stays within the guidelines they give, I don't see how there could be a problem.
