Okay, I apologize if this is the wrong place to ask this! I haven't been on here in awhile and wasn't sure, but I need some help!

So, I use a Smoktech VCT Pro on a Stingray clone with 18650 batteries. A sony VCT5 and 2 Efest 18650s all 30A. Sometimes my button gets hot hitting it! From what I can tell it's fine, as long as I don't let the battery get hot and don't constantly hit it. I let it cool and take it easy.

My questions are:
1. IS it normal for buttons to get hot at 0.2 ohms?
2. Is my 18650 battery okay for this low of ohms?
3. Can tube modes with 18650 batteries handle any lower ohms than this? Say, 0.15 ohms? Doesn't seem like it.

Just want to make sure I am safe vaping and not doing anything stupid!

The spring on your clone is not the best and so it is not as low a resistance as it should be. It is heating up because the resistance of the spring is near the resistance you are wrapping your coils. The highest resistance in the circuit is going to heat up the fastest.

So, you could fix the hot button with a better spring. Or get some neodynium magnets.

You are pushing your batteries to the limit. I have done it too, but I build RDAs every day. Be careful. I would recommend to stay above .21 with a single battery.

I am not going to do a whole safety speil, but just make sure you know your batteries CDR, ohms law, and are measuring your resistances.

Well the VCT Pro is a sub-ohm tank with pre-wrapped coils at 0.2 ohms. I'll look into neodynium magnets. Do you think a box mod would be a more safe option? If so what are the good box mods on the market right now?

Don't need any battery exploding on me. I use only the safer known brands and make sure they are authentic and 30A 2500 mahs. I'll stick with the 0.2 ohms and no lower.

I was looking at these batteries, are they any good? LG-HB6 18650 Low Ohm Batteries for … - Tilt

1: well it's not surprising.
the faster you drive, the faster your engine gets hot.
2: No. And as the battery gets older the less okay it is.
3: The more watts you try to get out of a single battery, the worse it gets.
That's why there are dual battery box mechs.

Your authentic VTC5 will handle that load. The Efests are rewraps so I don't know which one you have.

Hmmm well my Efests are: 2100 mahs IMR 3.7V LI-MN 30A and seem to be authentic.

Would LG Hb6 18650's be a better option? Since I only have one authentic VCT5 and don't know where to get anymore authentics.

Ah, those Efests are rewraps of the Sony VTC4, IIRC. They will work too.
Of course, any regulated box with protection is safer than a mech, but those batteries aren't going to explode in your mech at that resistance.

Ahh, okay glad to know! Was worried about it, thanks a lot for the information!

Probably going to look into some box mods as well.

The coils I wind are about 10x the resistance you're talking about and I have to use a parallel pair of 18650 cells to get a worthwhile life expectancy out of them.

Others have already pointed out that your button is getting hot because it probably has more resistance than your coil.

Well, I'm sure you are aware that there are regulated and un-regulated box mods available. There are also dual battery box mods available to utilize two 18650 batteries.

Anything regulated will be safer than an un-regulated mod. And a dual battery mech mod will be safer than a single battery mech mod.

You've gotten some great advice so no need to add to it but I did want to say that the VTC5 is a 20A cell. While it can be run with a coil build that draws 30A when pulsed, you have less of a safety margin in case your button gets stuck, breaks, or gets accidentally pressed in your pocket.

The HB6 is the safest cell to use for over 20A but it is a low capacity cell. Next safest are the VTC4 and 25R, and they are higher capacity. The VTC5's aren't unsafe by any means. It's just about the degree of safety. Pick the level you're comfortable at.

Here's a chart of the various cells that helps when selecting a safe cell to use a different current levels:
