I suppose that GlaxoSmithKline's goal is to sell more Nicorette and perhaps promotional information doesn't need to be 100% true, but you'd think that they would get the science right.

Nicotine Addiction Facts | Understanding Your Physical Addiction To Nicotine

The facts about nicotine addiction.

  • Nicotine causes a release of dopamine into the brain, resulting in feelings of pleasure. Her... and "cra.." have the same effects on the brain.
  • Over time, more nicotine is needed to reach the same level of pleasure.
  • If the brain stops getting the nicotine it wants, you'll feel desperate cravings that are hard to overcome with willpower alone.

The first two bullet points seem to be a tad controversial as far as reserachers are concerned.

“IV nicotine reduced craving for cigarettes, and increased ratings of lightheadedness and dizziness. However, no significant satisfaction or reward was reported after IV nicotine.”

Rose JE, Behm FM, Westman EC, Johnson M. Dissociating nicotine and nonnicotine components of cigarette smoking. Pharmacol Biochem Behav. 2000 Sep;67(1):71-81.

“Euphoria is endorsed only 10% of the time while smoking [13] plus very few smokers report euphoria as a reason for smoking [14].”

Hughes JR. Why does smoking so often produce dependence? A somewhat different view. Tob Control2001;10:62-64

In the chart, “euphoria” is not listed under Acute Effects/Health Risks for nicotine or other stimulants.

National Institute of Drug Abuse. Commonly Abused Drugs. http://drugabuse.gov/DrugPages/DrugsofAbuse.html

“We conclude that on the current evidence nicotine cannot be considered more addicting than coc.....”

Henningfield JE, Cohen C, Slade JD. Is nicotine more addictive than coc....? Br J Addict. 1991 May;86(5):565-9.

“Not a single instance of tolerance to the euphoric effects of smoking, as evident from increased self-administration over time, is provided in the Surgeon General’s report, either in humans or in animals… humans actually reduce nicotine intake over time.”

Elaine, if you are quoting drug names, the software censors it out. This is because we don't want the web to see ECF as a place to find info in that area, and because younger noobs tend to go overboard discussing that type of thing.

If you want to mention a drug name such as one that may come from China and be white, you could put he.... and we would know from the context what you meant. The mods will not allow the word censor to be bypassed (rightly), so you must instead just give us a hint.
