I love Canon, and my old film camera is Canon as well. Always preferred them, but even refurbished their cameras are a bit more cost-wise. Heck, the T3i is still the same price as the T5i every where I looked. Nikon definitely isn't bad, though, and it will be a good starter camera. I don't have anything invested like you, and I probably won't be buying too many lenses. At least for a while.

I love refurbished electronics! I got my Cuisinart (Keurig) for $100 when they were still $200 new. My microwave is refurbished and so is my smart watch. I just don't see the need to pay full retail when I can get the same thing for smaller dollars, lol! Oh and both Garmins are refurbished, too! Can't remember what else but I know I buy a lot of stuff that way. Oh! My Vitamix! Got that for $150 off retail with the same warranty as a new one.
I think it's great you got a Nikon. You can't beat the picture quality from that camera!

Canon is amazing, too! I would be happy with either a Nikon or a Canon. My dad has an old film Nikon that I keep trying to get him to give me. He has a ton of lenses (got them when we lived in Germany) and he says it isn't as good as the new digitals, but it really does take gorgeous pictures. Maybe someday he will relent and hand it over.
