Still learning - very slowly - about batteries.
That one's "protected" - thought we should be getting unprotected for a VAMO?
In theory, being that the Vamo is a regulated mod that uses a boost circuit, if you plan on using higher voltages/watts, the boost circuit will need the "high drain" ability of the unprotected but safer chemistry IMR batteries.

Li on batteries use a more volatile chemistry that can become unstable if pushed to the limit, hense the need for built-in protective circuits in the battery for safer use. Li Mn IMR batteries use a safer chemistry that are not as volatile nor unstable when pushed, and do not require protective circuits built into them.

these are non-protected, go to amazon and you will find the better orbitron protected 3400 mah bats, 4 days on my silver bullet and 2 1/2 on my provari

The NCR18650PD actually outperforms the NCR18650B protected at between 2-3 amps and up, which is not that uncommon for a VV/VW mod. If anything you would want the NCR18650B unprotected which edges the PD up to 5 amps but does not have the high drain capability. And then in that instance the PD has the bigger safety margin.

The panasonic ncr18650pd's are the best batteries IMO. Fasttech is the place to buy them at 15 bucks for two and they come in a nice plastic case. To charge faster you need a better charger, xtar sp2 has 1a charging that charges these in 2 and a half hours and its a quality charger. Basically you want a charger that can do 1a charging.

I have two Efest 18650s and a pair of Efest 18350s and I'd like to step up my game if possible. I'm looking for something that holds a charge longer, charges more quickly if such an option exists. Thanks for your help, pros.

Big fan of my Panasonic NCR18650B

In my opinion safety should be the first concern. The extra protection with a protected battery or an IMR is more important than getting a few extra milliamps. Safety circuits in both mods and battery chargers can fail. Battery charger failures are as much of a concern as a mod circuit failing. Do you really trust the quality of the chinese electronics? Every charger and battery manufacturer tells you not to ever leave a charging battery unattended. Just maybe there is a reason for that besides covering their asses.

Sorry guys, I am still confused here. I was also under the impression that you should be using an unprotected battery with a VAMO. I saw a recommendation for a Protected battery.

So the question is, with a vamo for example, always use unprotected? When is it ok to use a protected battery?

Just to keep it as simple and safe as possible, just use the red IMR batteries by AW. They've been considered one of the top couple of batteries for at least a few years, are as safe and dependable as a battery can be, have a respectable mAh rating, and are easily available at an affordable price.

Yep. Have been using for years and they are great. If it isn't broke, don't fix it. These work great in my REO. I have some redilast as well but they won't fit in a reo.

For safety I always use AW IMR batteries whenever I can. Although Panasonic also has a good reputation. If it fits an IMR will work with any pv. You will also find that they will last longer than most batteries with a higher milliamp rating. There is no standard on how to measure the capacity of batteries and sellers take advantage of this to give their batteries unrealistic ratings.

Yes unprotected for the vamo and other regulated mods, protected batteries are ok in mech mods but not necessary.

with a peak of 18amps i doubt you can tax the 2900's very far.

spin it how you want there is no denying it when a battery actually lasts well into 2-2 1/2 days in a provari. and almost the same in my vamo.
almost all mod vendors specify high drain IMR. while extra protection is nice, protected batteries are not listed as high drain. they WILL work but they are not being asked for so there is very little reason to pay extra for the chip and take the hit on performance.
in a regulated mod the actual power curve is negligible as the mod makes up for it on the vapor end.. and with high drain you make sure the mod never staggers looking for the occasion boost in current.

i agree safety first but i find it amusing everyone freaks about leaving the battery on the charger - next to the cell phone and lap top- thats been plugged in all night.

so when choosing a battery - if you know the brand is proven there is no reason not to get the biggest ones you can.

even provape states high drain imr and only on the website do they recommend AW (why wouldnt they its what they sell) but the actual manual says just high drain IMR.( at least in the one dloaded 6 months ago)

Not the ones we're recommending. Which is why we are recommending them.
