Ok, sorry for this, but felt the need to share my excitement!

I just redid my first coil. I used 2.5MM silica, 30 Gauge kanthal, and recoiled a protank mini. I did 6 wraps around both the wick and a small unfolded paperclip. These coils have a bit of legs on them, and unfortunately I don't have my ohm-meter in (yet) so I can't measure the ohms, but using the spreadsheet I grabbed from here on the forums, I'm estimating it to be 1.8-2.0 ohms.

Of course, everything went wrong...thought I had an ohmmeter, but it was only a "continuity" meter and didn't really show the ohms, every fire source in the house to burn off the wick and wire was dead, I'm old and couldn't find my strong reading glasses, etc...but in the end, I'm vaping on a coil I made and of course it's the sweetest vape of all, lol. And since I made it myself I know there's a bit of bias there...but I swear it gives more vapor than either the factory made 1.8 or 2.5 ohms that I have on hand. :vapor:

To all of you newbs like myself out there, keep on keeping on, you'll do it. If I can, anyone can! :)

I surly hope that your next post won't be "why did my battery blow up"!

Adventurism can be fun, but ................ please be safe.

Well...hopefully not! I'm using an eGo twist, and tried to estimate things to be in the "normal" replacement coil range, so maybe worst case scenario it won't be too big of an explosion. :p

I did dry fire it to "test" things as best as I could, and it did glow red, but not any quicker than the purchased coils I've been tinkering with, so I at least felt that things were not going into any extremely dangerous territory.

Warning heeded though, and understood. I have an ohmmeter on the way and I'm planning to shoot my "builds" in the 1.8 ohm range as I find it the best so far for my protank minis.

Now...when my genesis steam turbo and itaste battery thing come in...well.... :D

(joking!)

Advice heeded guys, thank you. I did find an ohmmeter, and ohm'd out a brand new 2.4ohm coil. The meter read 3.2ohms. I then ohm'd out both of my homemade coils, and one read 3.1 and the other 3.2, so I overshot my estimate, but looks like the end of the world has now been averted and they are in a "safe zone" (provided of course that the stock coils are themselves "safe"...but that's just a chance I'm going to have to take I guess).

Which itaste did you get?

It's an itaste SVD clone. I clicked the wrong thing on fasttech and bought the clone, which ironically is the exact same price as the one with the iTazte logo on it. I looked at the "real" one, then was looking at the pulldown they put on every product, and then thought I was back on the first one but wasn't. *sigh*

Oh well, live and learn! :)

Did something like that myself today on a non vape related item.

I've been wanting to rebuild the coils on our mini protanks as well! but between being gone 12 hours per day for my job and my commute, two kids and the housework.... I'm going the carto tank route instead. Hopefully it works out. Not that I'm having any issues with the stock heads so farm save for a couple that were knock offs. Just, if there's better I'd love to experience it.

Did your ohmmeter have a function to zero out the leads before measurement? If not just hold the leads together and note the reading (from your description, I'm guessing it will be in the 0.7 ohm range) this will read the resistance in the meter leads. Then after measuring your coils simply subtract the "lead resistance" for an accurate reading....:)

May I suggest the Aspire BDC mini? They sell for 5.99 at ecigcharleston.com., come in several colors, and holds 1.7mls. They are also a FOG MACHINE! lol
