First attempt at Clapton and wanted to make something high gauge for my lemo drop so I used a single piece of 30 gauge for the core and the wrap. Only got about 7-8 inches of useable wire out of 3 ft of core lol. The core kept flopping. I guess I need a pinvise, or something to keep it taught while I wrap it. Suggestions?

^ Seconded. I generally get best results when using at least a 4ga difference between the core and wrap. To keep the core from flailing around I use a swivel and bend the end of the core around one end, then clamp the other to something like a C-clamp or a bench vise. It makes it much easier to get consistent results. You can find them in the fishing area of walmart, or pull one off a keychain if it spins smoothly enough.
