Looks like technology is getting even more involved in the smoking game.

You can now 'print' your own custom pipes and smoking accessories
with something called a 3d printer. The idea is to upload your design in these machines and voila! Out comes a fully functional pipe, grinder or whatever.

Has anyone tried this?

They even have files online floating around.

Love to make my own custom pipe or two :)

I'd like to, but it would just be a toy to take up what's left of my free time! 3D printing is a really neat toy at the consumer level. For those who can spend thousands or tens of thousands there's the real deal industrial version.

It's an ion deposition process where microscopic drops of melted plastic are deposited in the shape of the image being printed. I really wouldn't want anything more complicated than a drip tip from the process. Plastics are melted and metals are powdered particles that are rolled on and followed by a glue layer, so it's not like metal that's melted and poured into a mold. There are some very expensive metal printers that use a laser to melt the powder together as it's deposited to make real metal parts.

One day there will be a low cost process for printing in real live stainless steel, but it's all in the early stages now.
