It might have a built in resistor. Use your multimeter and check resistances between the terminals. You could also look at the data sheet and see if it shows a resistor. If is is specified for 12V it probably does have a resistor built in in which case you will just have a dim led. If it had no resistor it would be very bright and then burned out if you applied 3.7 volts.

It did have a dim light. When I put 8.4v to it the light got brighter. I will take a look at the data sheet and make sure it has a resistor. But from what you stated it sounds like it already has one.
