I was looking for this a few months back. madvapes.com has them for like 15 bucks.

I lost interest after I heard from many people that PT's can't do a true 5v.

I don't really need a true 5v, I like my cartos around 4.3-4.7 anyway, so that's cool with me. I'll check madvapes, but is there anywhere in Canada that has them?

edit: Dam, madvapes has some sick acrylic passthroughs, probably just going to get one of those :p

Remember that a passthrough is only as good as the power source....

Most computers cannot handle 5 Volts out at the draw of an e-cigarette so you are going to get a huge voltage drop under load. Depending on your source, such as an average computer, you would be better off with a battery over a PT.

For a 1.5 LR atomizer at 5 volts you need a better than 3.5 amp source. Even a cartomizer you are looking at a 2 ohm draw.

To realize a true 5 volts, you would need to find an power source that can supply that much current. You can try looking for an AC adaptor rated at that or greater, or possibly the portable I-pod cordless chargers (but that is really just a battery anyhow)

Sorry I'm not really an electronics guy, but are you saying that if I get the ego passthrough from happyvaper and I get the 5v passthrough from mad vapes and plug it into my car (the same usb port that charges my ipod) that I'll get the same voltage because I'm using the same source?

A USB port puts out 0.5A albeit at 5V, some put out 1A (rare). The eGo passthru puts out 3.2V because you are vaping off the battery. and that is normal.

The PT I linked you to does vape at 5 volts. but not off a PC USB or any other USB device that does not have a discharge capacity of 2A or 2000mA. I use a 5V 2A wall plug

Furthermore, no one usually vapes an LR at 5V.

Yes and no.. Swtiched explained that better.

BUT be careful what the output of the car charger is. We'd had some issue where folks were trying to use the AC adaptor with the eGO passthrough. As they are only rated at 500ma, it isn't enough to keep up with the draw and was causing problem with it breaking the AC adaptor and the PT running out of charge.

Short story.. Make sure your USB port in the car, is 1A or better for the eGO PT or better than 2A for a direct (no inline battery) PT.

Ok, so these are the specs of the usb out:

USB I/F
- Compatibility USB 1.1 & 2.0 Full Speed
- File System FAT16/32
- Maximum Supply Current 500mA
- Decode MP3/WMA/AAC
Preout Level(mV)/Load - Unbalanced 2500mV/10kΩ(CD/CD-CH)
Preout Impedance(Ω) Under 600Ω
Speaker Impedance(Ω) 4-8Ω

So it sounds like with 2500mV and 500mah it's not suitable for a passthrough at all eh? FlyingJ gave me some advice that I should just use the lighter to usb attachment, is that the best way to go about it?

edit: if I understood him correctly that was his advice anyway :p

the preout levels are referring to the pre-amp outputs, usually RCA jacks, not the USB port.

but you are correct, with a maximum supply current of 500 mA, there is not enough current to adequately power a standard passthrough.

HOWEVER, you should be fine if using a passthrough with an inline battery, because the atty is drawing current from said battery. The load that is applied to the source (USB Port) is actually the current needed to charge the battery, which should be less than 500 mA (maximum charge current is usually 1C until battery reaches peak voltage, then charge is terminated when charge current has dropped to 3% of the rated battery current)

to be safe, why not get a USB adapter for your cigarette lighter?

Check the specs before you do that...

The cheap one from china that sometimes come with kits are only made for charging, and only put of 500ma.

Back in the 801 day LOL I spent about $35 from Circuit City to get one rated at 2amps

Thanks everyone for your advice!

What's more important to you?

Vaping or listening to music?

Plug it in, and if it fries, then get a cig lighter to usb adapter.

It's only money :)

haha, yea, I didn't realize all of this, I figured a usb port is a usb port... apparently not!

So if I got this, I could use this: Sand Bar Acrylic 5 volt 510 Passthrough without any fear?
