Any of the foams, from fluval to blue to buff pads, need to be adjusted through sizing and trimming to work right. Too small and you flood your atomizer, too large and they won't flow much liquid at all.

Take a Saturday morning and play with different size plugs until you find the sweet spot. It may take a while, but the end result is a very, very good filler.

No straw is needed. If you find that it isn't wicking, take it out and trim a tiny bit off of one edge (that is cut wider than the cartridge).

You are better off to cut it a bit too wide rather than not wide enough (then it may leak). You only need to compress the foam in one direction (width) so cut the width just slightly larger and the depth and length the same size as the cart.

If you use VG liquid that is thick, it may absorb a bit more slowly with the foam and seem to want to pool. It will soak in, but will do so a bit more slowly. I find a small 2 dram glass dropper can help to force VG fluids through foam fillers.

I've used one piece for well over 4 months. If I think it needs it, I'll rinse it out and put it back in so no need to throw it away for quite a while. Let us know how it goes!

Do foam carts work better than pyramid tea bags? I've noticed that I have to top off every few puffs with the PTB and when I take them out to rinse them, there is quite a bit of juice at the bottom that gets wasted. I have a whole bag of buff puffs but never thought to try that. Anyone have some good instructions on how to cut the buff puff for a good fit and less topping off times? TIA

someone (Kristin?) made a post about buff puffs and how to cut etc. in the cart mod section I believe it was...a search for buff puffs should find it. Said she had good results. If I remember right, there is a grain to it you have to cut the right way. I found mention of it in this thread, might start there http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/cartridge-mods/46916-reservoir-straw-plug-mod-rsp-mod-14.html

About straws. I tried those too and they made exactly 0 difference compared to a cart full of filler. No more capacity, and does not help move the juice at all. It simply adds complication and placebo effect.
