Can someone tell me if you take your battery out of the 510 passthru, will it still work when hooked up to the usb? I ask because I am trying to figure out if my passthru is dead, or if I need a new battery. I took my battery out and still hooked up to the usb it wouldn't work. I kind of thought the battery was just for when you didnt have it plugged in. If it is the battery, does anyone know if you can get them at "regular" stores? Thanks in advance!

This is a very interesting question.
I have another customer having the same problem, but they think it is the dual usb adapter not working correctly.

There is no way I can test, as I dont believe I have anymore 510 PT's.

B, I will check to see if I have anymore spare batts for the 510PT, If I do, I will pass one to you.

In the meantime, maybe someone can chime in to tell.

I think the PT wont work, because it doesnt have a wiring set up to bypass the batt.
The batt itself is actually the full circuit.
That is my opinion.

No it will not work if you take the battery out.......I just dismantled an old 510 PT and tried to design a PT direct without the battery. The battery does send info to the circuit board which is in the battery box.

An electronics person may be able to tell you if this is possible to do but I don't think so...I cut the battery box off........spliced the passthru wires together........plugged in the USB...nope......

lol....been getting into modding lately.....trying all different things....it is quite fun!!

Oh Sandy, sorry you destroyed your passthru. Thanks for letting me know that it wont work. Yeah, if you have any spares rob, that would be great. You guys don't know if you can buy at stores like radio shack or anything, do you? I miss my PT :( I never imagined it "had" to have the battery, I just figured it was for back-up if you wern't near a usb, cause my original 401 PT was straight to the usb, no battery. Interesting that the 510 relies on it like that...

I'm an electronics tech by trade... from what i can tell there are generally two different types of PT'S.

One we'll call a "true PT" is powered right from the usb. Usally these wont have chips in them at all. Manual PT with no cutoff time. It's just power straight to the ATTY.

The other type, which I think are generally more common use the chip and the battery in circuit. You can think of the battery as a rather large capacitor at this point. When you demand power to the ATTY the power is actually coming from the Batt, which is just recharged constantly via the usb. Now there is not a lot of info on the subject, but the current needed to drive an atty is much less then the 500ma a usb port can produce. So when the bats dead, it just can drive straight from the USB.

Now... because it's come up.. I'm working on some mods of my own. I'm going to be building up a few Firewire PT's for you mac lovers or people who just have the card. It could actually pump out enough for HV mods as it's 1.25A at 12V max. I'm just working on building a limiter circut now thats small enough to fit inside say a 4081 batt.

Now when I see all of them stop popping up on websites.... I'll know someone here leaked the idea :p
