I'm kind of a noob to e-smoking, but I'm a total forum lurker and I tend to over research everything. I have a manual 510 and I've had this problem over the last few days. It was burnt poly fibers and liquid in my atomizer. I solved it today. Take some tweezers and pull out any stray fibers from your atomizer's wick. Take a flashlight and try grabbing just under the wick and sometimes you will find lots of little fibers that you cant normally see. Then blow out the atty in both directions (catch everything in a paper towel and wipe the connector end really well before putting your mouth on it, wad up some paper towel and gently put it down by the wick when you blow it out from that direction.) . After you do this, put 2 drops on the wick, fill a cart and make sure there are no stray fibers coming out, attach the cart and let the cart and atomizer sit for a few minutes with the cart facing up. After a few minutes, start it up. Puff lightly at first to get it going again and then it should pick up and be good. Also any time I feel the atomizer warm up, I try to let it rest for a few minutes so it doesn't burn the liquid. I bought some blue aquarium filter foam and packed few new carts today. It has totally fixed the burning poly problem, and I have been vaping all evening off one cart. It is awesome and I highly recommend it! Good luck!

If you've had the unit for a while and this is just recently starting... may I guess that you've been using the same cart over and over again without changing or washing out the polyfill filler?

Sadly the stuff doesn't last forever. It will get caramelized and a little nasty. It's ability to wick the liquid will change and/or deteriorate.

You can get some of the performance back by washing the filler. You can get more back my changing the filler or cart. You can get even more performance by going to one of the popular mods.

It might be that you're overworking the atty. You could be burning the juice (or at least some of the flavoring) if you're taking those 7-8 drags quick enough. Keep a finger close to the atty, feel it a little as you're vaping, if it gets too hot, let it cool down a bit, if it's hot with a few drops in it, you're overheating it, which could be burning the plastic on the cart too.

(Please be VERY careful when pulling errant fibers out from under the atty bridge. On a 510, a lot of them are supposed to be there!)

i accidentally ripped at a strand of the wick and it's still in there to the side, will it vape ok?

i was only trying to grab a tiny fiber with tweezers and yanked on the wick instead :(

damn, still not workin i tried everything...wtf

i have the same problem, just switched to the new atty and tried the spring mod from a pen. no burnt taste, and i let it sit for a couple minutes every 7-8 puffs to cool it down and not get the burnt-ness...

sad these things are faulty like that :p

gonna look for blue foam today...

Hey I have found this to be about normal behavior. 5-8 good hits, then a drop or 2 in the cartridge for best taste (or let it sit vertical tip up for a few minutes then you have to add more drops the more you do this.) I am pretty certain you have vaped all that was in the wick in the atty, and the juice in the tip of the tip.

For me the good news is, those 5-8 (24mg/ml) hits does the trick then i am good for a while.

The cart mods (cartridge modifications) allow you to store more liquid in the cartridge. Some also provide more juice to the attomizer. Since you indicate there is no burnt taste when you top off, it could be that you're vaping faster than the atty can wick causing the cart to loose it's wetness. Try adding liquid to the cart more often. I usually add a drop or two after about 6 to 8 drags.

Very clean and straight forward answer DMertz. Most likely correct from my experience as well.

So MMAfighter, your description is really that of starving the coil. Using up what's in the wick. This true for any atomizer.

My use of 510's, primary atty for me, has shown that for chain vaping it's best to have 2 units available regardless the cartridge modification used.

Ya hit the thing a few times and the liquid in the atomizers wick needs to have time to be replenished. If you have 2 units going, one is wicking new liquid from the cartridge while your hitting the other.

The oft mentioned practice of "pulling burnt fiber" from under the bridge is a good way to to shorten the life of your atty and really unnecessary IMO.

people have different tastes. in another thread i saw a post from a guy swearing his atty's were dead after a few days. I hate the first few days of a new atty, its got that strong primer that needs to burn off. I just assumed when the strong primer hits wore off, he thought the atty was dead because the taste became a LOT lighter.

Anyways, the only atty I have had die, was because I took tweezers and picked the burnt looking fibers from underneath it. When I did that I messed up the the metal wick. There is a nice thread in here about rebuilding atty's, you would probably find it to be a good read for how the atty actually works.

If you prefer the flavor by keeping the atty topped off (I feel you on this) then by all means top it off! I have noticed that when I am driving and I let it have time to rewick juice between vaping sessions, it takes a lot more to fill up. It appears the topping off every couple drops used, or pacing and using more of the fluid in the cart (an unsupported trick is to tap it and force juice to come from cartridge to atty) winds up using the same amount of juice for the same amount of hits.
