After smoking my 901 now for about two weeks I decided I wanted something else for comparison. I looked at the polls and reviews and it seemed like the 510 was starting to pass the 901 in terms of popularity, so I ordered a Joye 510 kit with "new & improved" automatic batteries. These two e-cigs are most definitely different vaping experiences, so here is my take on them.

Vapor Production:
With fresh batteries and a newly filled cartridge in each the 510 does produce a bit more vapor than the 901. It's not the "staggering difference" I expected from the talk on many of the forums, but it certainly produces more vapor in a "short puff". You can get about the same from the 901 if you do a primer puff followed by a long draw but it takes longer. Even though there is more vapor from the 510, it seems "thinner" than what my 901 produces. This is much more noticeable using VG based liquid. Here is the twist, once the battery is about half way gone the 901's vapor production catches up to the 510 and eventually surpasses it.

Battery Life:
At the rate I smoke my 901 usually lasts me about 4 hours or more on a single battery, which works out well because the battery only takes about 3-4 hours to charge. I just alternate which one is in the charger and rarely run out of power. My 510 never lasts more than about an hour to an hour and a half and the batteries take longer to re-charge than the 901 batteries do. If this was my only device I would be in trouble unless I had several chargers and a stack of batteries. I had read that the 510 burns 20% hotter so the batteries run out "a little quicker" than the 901's do, but that is like saying a Hummer Limo holds "a few more people" than a VW Bug.

Throat Hit, Draw, and Taste:
The 510 has a slightly lighter draw than the 901 and gives a stronger throat hit. I am guessing this is because the vapor is warmer due to the 510's higher atomizer temperature. What I did not expect is the huge flavor difference between the two. I stopped even putting any "subtle" flavors in the 510 after the second day because it is a total waste of good liquid. The 510 does ok with "sharp" flavors like Apple, Strawberry, and Peach; but flavors like Chocolate, Vanilla, and Banana are barely discernable. The taste drop is lesser in VG based liquid but in PG they just about disappear.

Cartridges, Atomizers, and Liquid Consumption:
I absolutely hate the 510 cartridge design. Sometimes it gurgles so much it sounds like I am smoking a frikkin ..... At first I thought it was the atomizer getting flooded but it turned out most of the time it is just the cartridge. I think the two small airways on the 510 cause condensation to build up where the 901's larger airway lets it pass through. It actually smokes better with a 901 cart on it than it does with an actual 510 cart. The 510 does a better job when the cartridge gets low, but I don't mind topping off my cart from time to time. My other complaints about the 510 are that it burns through e-liquid like a starving vampire in a blood bank and the atomizer gets so hot you can cook off of it.

Overall Opinion:
I have to say I won't be getting rid of my 901s any time soon. I like the 510 and it is a good backup e-cig, but I really enjoy the robust flavors I get from the 901, not to mention its vastly superior batteries and lower liquid consumption rate. The 510 may produce a bit more vapor but it fades with the battery, and that means quick. I think my next purchase will be an 801 since it may give me the best of both worlds.

Yes, it's a Joye 510, I got it from TheVaporPro.com.

I went with the auto batteries because I didnt want to be bothered with the switch or risk frying the atomizer by keeping it on too long.

I don't have a problem with the "auto" part of the battery, that works fine. It doesn't seem to suffer from the "slightest breeze" or "loud music" problems of the earlier models.

There are two main reasons I still prefer the 901: Battery life (easily triple the 510) and the taste. You lose soooo much flavor with the 510 and I tried about 8 different liquids with it so far. Some don't suffer as much as others, but they are all diminished.

I just bought my 901's two weeks ago so it is possible I have the new version, I'm not sure how to tell. I got my 901's from SaveASmoker.com (great service from them by the way).

I also used the DSE 901 for several weeks.

I spent today exclusively on the 510. I was vaping VG and Coconut (which is known to be weak to begin with)... At any rate, I didn't find any decrease in flavor to speak of.

I have both the manual and the automatic battery, and the manual wins hand's down for me and I'm a blonde! ;)

I don't know how to really compare the battery life of each, as I didn't time them. However, one thing was obvious. On the 901, I have 6 batteries rotating in chargers all day. Today, with the 510, I only had two in rotation and I vaped that coconut like a mad monkey! haha :thumb:

Wow. It seems that we have completely different experiences with the two. Out of my 510 (manual), 4081, 506, and 901, I feel that the 901 is my least favorite.

Vapor Production:
With fresh batteries and a newly filled cartridge in each the 510 does produce a bit more vapor than the 901. It's not the "staggering difference"

To me, the vapor production is extremely significant with the 510.

I expected from the talk on many of the forums, but it certainly produces more vapor in a "short puff". You can get about the same from the 901 if you do a primer puff followed by a long draw but it takes longer.

I never do a primer puff with my 510. I push the manual button first and a split second later, I take the drag. Waste of vapor in my opinion to do primer puffs.

Battery Life:
My 510 never lasts more than about an hour to an hour and a half and the batteries take longer to re-charge than the 901 batteries do.

Get a PCC for your 510 and you'll have a charged battery practically all day. All I take to work is my PCC. I don't carry spare batteries, chargers, or USB passthroughs anymore.

Throat Hit, Draw, and Taste:
The 510 does ok with "sharp" flavors like Apple, Strawberry, and Peach; but flavors like Chocolate, Vanilla, and Banana are barely discernable.

Cola, RY4, and Red Bull are my favorites and they definitely taste better on the 510 to me. I haven't tried the 'subtle' flavors you mentioned.

Cartridges, Atomizers, and Liquid Consumption:
I absolutely hate the 510 cartridge design. Sometimes it gurgles so much it sounds like I am smoking a frikkin .....

Yep, I kinda like the .... sound :) However, the cart's probably been overfilled. When I have that problem, I take a paper clip and take out the round end of the mouthpiece and use a q tip to clean out the liquid that deposits there. Then I take out the cart and blow into the mouthpiece to get the juice out of the two small airways.

I don't get this condition that often as I try not to overfill and I try to minimize condensation by continuing to take a drag after I let go of the manual button for at least a half a second.

The 901 is much worse to me as the thing just leak liquid out of the mouthpiece like crazy. Take several drags out of the 901 and then take the cartridge out. I usually see tons of condensation on the sides which eventually leak through the mouthpiece into your mouth, YUCK!

Another thing about the 901 mouthpieces is that they just suck. The mouthpieces get looser and looser after every top off until eventually they just slide right off. I've been using the same mouthpiece on my 510 for several weeks out and it still as snug as the first day.

Overall Opinion:

I wanted to like the 901 a lot more but my manual 510 kicks but in every way. Maybe you should try the manual. Once I got into it, I can't imagine going automatic again.

Get the PCC for your 510. It's the best add-on for it IMHO. Where I used to carry spare batteries and different types of chargers, I just have a fully charged PCC to get me through the entire day.

I respectfully disagree... A passthru with a Kensington Power Pack is a much better solution IMHO not only cause well the Kensington will Power 2-3 days without a recharge and it comes with a 2 year waranty!!!

I got a Kensington Power Pack and a passthrough battery as well. I like them both very much. However, I love the portability of the PCC. Plus I get a lot of a lot of weird looks when vaping with wires :)

All of my 901s are now collecting dust. I get great flavor with my 510 manuals.
Also, is it just me, or does the vapor from the 510 seem, for lack of a better way to describe it, dry, like a real cigarette. I mean my 901s vapor always seemed wet. It is hard to explain.
I wasn't getting juice in my mouth, just the way the vapor comes across to me.

It isn't overfilled carts, it did it with the included, pre-filled, Marlboro cart by the third puff.

Quite honestly, the batteries are so bad I wonder if they are just defective. I timed it last time, after a 6 hour recharge I only got 32 puffs from the 510 before the battery was gone.

If the batteries are bad it doesn't say much for 510 quality control. It came with two atomizers and the first one lasted all of an hour before going cold. The second one has been going strong for several days but it doesn't get near as much use as my 901 because it it always recharging.

Maybe I will pick up a manual battery from a different supplier like Totally Wiked and see if that makes a difference.

Agreed. The 510's vapor is most definatley "dryer" but I think that is why it kills some of the taste.

While I'm sure personal preferances have much to do w/ the perceived performance I too agree w/ the OP.

Quick drip and throat hit to get the day going the 510 works well. The 901 is best for me for all day vaping as well as pleasure. The observation that subtle flavors are lost w/ the 510 is so true. I've recently become a dripping convert and w/ a 510 and 901 side by side, empty carts as mouthpeices, the 901 beats the 510 hands down for flavor.

Love your avatar, digdreams!

510 manual is much better than automatic one. My first 510 kit was Titan with two automatic batteries. I ordered 2nd set with two manual batteries from another supplier. Much much better~

I do like DSE901 which is my first kit from TW that is still going strong, but since manual 510 I have started to use 901 less and less.

Wow i learned something new about my 510 i always assumed that the mouth piece was one piece. I took a paper clip and popped out the end and i did have a little bit of juice in there. I love my 510 i drip with it on a passthrough all day at work.
