Hi folks, I am a new DIY'er, and came upon a lot of these vials on the Bay. They are perfect for blending down a steeped juice to achieve a desired level of flavor. I am working with tobacco flavors, and have found that doing the drops and then scaling up doesn't always seem to work for me. It gets me close enough, and then after a steep time I analyze the flavor, and most have been too strong. These vials make it easy to mix a few different ratios to get within a .25% value for my flavoring, and let them sit for a few days to settle in. If I use a syringe I could probably come even closer. I've got about 15-20 flavors to work my way through. I can see this is going to be a big learning curve already, but these things are going to speed up this process a bit. They cost less than a dime each in bulk :) I don't know if it's cool to post a link to auctions, but can do that if it isn't against the rules here.

I just had a thought that if I set up my digital scale, I can drop in the flavoring at different ratios, say by 1/2 percentage point, and then just put a bunch of these up to steep and then have a whole bunch of flavors target strengths nailed down a bit closer while using a minimum of juice and flavor concentrate. hmmm, this might save me a ton of time and nic base...

Now you're gonna talk me into buying a digital scale:) What kind of accuracy do they come in terms of mg? I've heard of mixing by weight but a little confused. If the typical recipe calls for 1% for example they usually mean 1ml in 100ml. I suppose you can accomplish the same result by mixing 1GRAM in 100 GRAMS. Am I right?

Hmmm...

The eBay thing leads you right to that seller's web site. For some reason the same size - except with blue caps instead of white - costs less. $18.11 for 250. The shipping cost is the same if you order right from their web site. Transport Vial by UNIMED MIDWEST INC - Vials by Zoro Tools Industrial Supplies

Interesting stuff. They sell that format in 5 ml, 10 ml, 30 ml and 50 ml. Unfortunately you have to get up to the 30 or 50 ml sizes to get anything in a quantity of less than 250.

Co-op anyone?

Good points Rickajho. 250 is way more than I needed, but the convenience factor is what sold me on them. I have been using a couple of these for months now that came from a "water test kit" from a water softener company. How do these co-op's work?
P.S. the vials and caps come bagged separately ;)

Yeah, it wouldn't break me either. I could use maybe 50 of them, but five times that many starts heading into weird hoarding behavior or something. lol

You could always sell excess off in the classifieds, as long as you don't try to profit off them. :2c:

They really are a neat idea for DIY test batches because of that nice open mouth. Much easier - and cleaner - to get stuff into those than 5 ml bottles with dropper fittings. I have graduated glass cylinders but these put the glass cylinders into the "why bother?" category.

Thanks for the heads up! :toast:

To mix by weight might yield different results from mixing by volume. Different ingredients have different specific weights.... One ml of VG weighs more than 1ml of PG which in turn weighs more than 1ml of alcohol-based flavoring. How do you account for this discrepancy? Gonna head on over to the thread and see what I could find.

I ordered mine from EBay but from a different seller. They sell in quantities of 20 at the cost of $7.50 shipped. And the material is HDPE - hard plastic, more resistant to leeching. Here is the link:

20 New 5 ml HDPE Hard Plastic Storage Sample Vials w Screw on Caps | eBay

I wonder... those look exactly like the Unimed vials. According to the Zorotools web site the Unimed vials caps are HDPE - but the vial itself is PP-CO. I would feel better about this one if the seller listed the manufacturer so that could be checked.
