For a cheap intro to HV vaping try this 510 high voltageManual USB Passthrough. If you want a cheap battery mod try the RoughStack or 3xAA 5 Volt Boxmod with slow change LED when they are available.
When you go to HV you have to learn a little about matching the atty to the voltage. You need to get the battery output matched to the resistance level of the atomizer, within a certain range, in order to get good results. For 3.7v I use 2.0 ohm LR's, for 6v I use 3.5 ohm. Once you get it right it's way better than you can do with an eGo.

I love this article which explains the difference in LR and HV atomizers and how they work. I think this will give you a better idea of what to expect if you want to move up to 5V or 6V vaping. There's also a nifty calculator you can use to determine which voltages and ohms will work best together.

I don't agree that a passthrough is the same as a good 5 volt PV. And IMO there is nothing better than 5 volt vaping. I can see where variable volt would be just as good, if not a little better due to the fexibility. There are a few good 5 volt options. Two that I believe would serve you well are the GLV2: Electronic Cigarettes and E-Liquid - Great Lakes Vapor and one of Ken's 5 volt Box Mods: Box Mods
